BOROUGH OF PETONE. ON behalf of the People of Petone, I desire to Return our warmest THANKS to all those who so nobly assisted in averting a much more serious disaster than that which has actually overtaken us in the Eire of Sunday. The heroic, efforts of the Petone Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the Gear Company’s Brigade, are worthy of our highest admiration. The Gear Company and its staff have laid the town under a deep obligation for the use of their effective steam pump, water and fire appliances. The gallant band of civilian volunteers who saved adjoining buildings with blankets and buckets of water, under trying conditions, materially helped to stay the conflagration. I be? to thank the Superintendent of the Wellington Brigade for responding so cheerfully to my appeal for assistance by sending out men and hose, hannilv not ultimately required. To all those who have suffered so severely we offer our warmest sympathy. I trust that the lessons to be adduced from the occurrence will be taken to heart, and lead at no distant date to the adoption of an effective system of protection from similar losses. E.
