SPORTING.

WELLINGTON' RACING CLUB. SUMMER MEETING—SECOND' DAY. Yesterday was a delightful day on the Hutt Park racecourse, and the attendance to witness the second day's racing of tho Wellington Racing Club was unusually large. The racing was first-class, and reflected great credit on the handieappers rn both tho open and hack events. A very largo proportion of ladies were present, and some of tho dresses worn were, much admired. The races were got off in excellent time. The one protest of tho meeting, thaf entered by the owner of .Punawai against Stockade for alleged inconsistent running, occurred after the last race had been run, and the stewards decided that it should not be sustained. Again a .largo amount of money was put through the totalizators, viz., £14,779, in comparison with £11,452 on thrsccond day last year. The amount tuns manipulated during tho two da vs was £29,743, in comparison with £'2l,879 Ja.st year, or an increase of £7BOI. An excellent luncheon was served in the grandstand booth, and the attendance was an improvement on that oi the first, day.

Racing commenced with tho January Handicap, for which five horses had accepted. The public were much puzzled after a study of the handicaps, but eventually tho majority decided to go for the ton-weight, Tortulla. Those who did so wore not disappointed, as the Porirna marj showed a great turn of pace, and easily disposed of Paiavcr and ail the rest opposed to her once they got into the straight. The southern horse Blazer was made a great favourite for the Electric Handicap, and tho son of St. Clair—Mountain Lily justified tho confidence reposed in him nj smothering all opposition. Sentry, whe was backed from outside, made a gallant attempt to pace it with him, but tho top weight never faltered, and won practically as ho liked. The Racing Club Handicap was an exercise gallop for Boreas. Jenkins rode with rings

attached to tho Diddle, to enable him to got a pull on his mount in the earlier stages of the race. The first quarter of a mile was run at a slow pace, which suited the great chestnut to a nicety. When his head was let go he shot past tho field and won with something to spare. This performance won an ovation for the popular old horse. The public wore divided in opinion as to which horse would win tho Juvenile Handicap, a:: the Vetting indicates. Beddington was favourite, Phouks '■pcdjwJ in demand, and Tlie Shannon third on the list. Tho latter showed a magnificent turn or speed, and running wide won an exciting race by about a lengtn and a half; Phooka losing ground by cutting back to- the fence after being shoved out at tho.turu. All tho competitors in the Welter Handicap were well supported, jjonovan being made a hot favourite. The ywinner turned up in , Spider, ridden by Derrett, Mr Tun cron's smart little chestnut leaving nothing else a chance. Uila wou’d undoubtedly have been closer up if she could have got, going at the outset. A remarkable feature about the Welter was that the three bottom weights filled tlie places. Tho Wellington Stak ;s brought forth a slashing lot of two and three-year-olds. The winner, Cminie duel,"showed a groat dash of pace, and won with a lot in hand, though hotly pursued throughout b.y Mr Ormond’s smart- representative, Paphos. Glenogle upset a variety' of expectations when he beat a well-backed field in the Metropolitan Handicap. If Advance had not boon slow in getting way on, there would have been a much mar a exciting finish. . As it was the blamr horse put up a great performance bymaking up his ground, and getting so near Co the Clanranald colt in Imie losec. The Second Hack Handicap, which concluded the meeting, was a. big hotting race. The veteran Stockade once more turned up trumps, dud -i.dd his supporters the respectable dividend of £B. Punawai again ran a gor. ,1 mare, and had hard luck in only' sec icing second place. Appended are details of tho racing; January Handicap, of 125 sovs ; one mile and a furlong. 551 Mr D.
