THE GATTON MURDERS.
..SENSATIONAL EVIDENCE. A BUTCHER SUSPECTED. BLOOD SPLASHES ON HIS JUMPER. ALLEGED SCREENING BY POLICE. (Received October 5, 10.45 p.m.) BRISBANE, Thursday. Some sensational’evidence in regard to the Gattou tragedy was given before the Police Commission to-day. A witness said he had suspected that a man employed by a local butcher murdered the Murphys. The witness added mac he had mentioned his suspicion to detectives, who told him to “shut uu,” as the man in question was innobent. Giving his reasons for his suspicions, (bo witness explained that lie had seen fifty or sixty blood splashes on the man’s jumper. . ' These splashes, in too witness’s opinion, could not bo accounted for by the fact that the man had been carrying meat.
Another witness said that', he saw the man referred to at -niglm, just prior to the ante of the murders, near the spot on which they were comnutted. A constable wno also gave evidence accused 1 the detectives of screening the man suspected by the first witness.
