Under the powers conferred upon him by the Sea Fisheries Act and amendments thereof, the Governor has made tne following regulation with respect to the granting of licenses for the taking of sponges from sponge-beds in New Zealand’s coastal waters, iucensds shall bo granted by the Governor, who shall have. power to fix the rental to be charged, and to ‘make any special conditions in anv license that he may deem advisaoie. Mr J. G. Clayton, M.R.C.V.S., has been appointed a special inspector of the slaughterhouse owned and occupied by Messrs Mitchell and Co., situaieu at Aramoho, Wanganui. The date of Major Alfred W. Robin’s commission as staff officer for instruction of mounted rifle Volunteers in the Middle and South Islands is dated the 16th of last month. Mr W. C. Macdermott, of Foxton; Mr Jas. Penney, of Rongotea ; and Mr G. W. Mitchell, of Sanson, have been appointed registrars or marriages, ctc.y for their respective districts as from the 16th hist. Mr Samuel Brown’s appointment as a jnember of the Court of Arbitration on the recommendation of a majority of the Industrial Unions of Employers is gazetted.
Dr James Hudson, of Nelson, has resigned his commission as surgeon-maym on the Volunteer medical staff.
Captain-Commandant the Hon C. J. Johnston and Major James Purnell have been transferred from the Volunteer service to the honorary unattached list. Captain Joseph Hyde, of the H Battery Artillery Volunteers, has retired. Twenty persons have been granted letters of naturalisation in the colony during the past week. These include Jorgeft Eoch Christensen, storekeeper, Kaituna. OollingWood, and Wilhelm Scheif, labourer, Marton. Mariners are notified by the Marine Board •of South Australia that a ■ black can buoy, - .unmounted with staff and cylinder, m lieu of the black, tripod beacon m cut'oued in the original notice, was placed on the south edge- of the jiarion reef,, two and a half miles south of the xrouinidge Lighthouse, last month. It is also announced that a reu light, visible five miles, will be exhibited from the lighthouse platform, shmving over the .Marion reef between the bearings N. 4odeg.' E. and N. 4odeg. W 1 This refers to Admiralty Chart No., 2389 a and 21u3, The Rev John Richards, Wesleyan clergyman, Ims been appointed an officiating minister under the Marriaare Act. During the month of September fortysix estates of deceased persons were handed over to the Public Trustee for auininistration.
