ARRIVAL OF THE TOMOANA

The Tyser Company’s line new steamer Tomoana. from New York via Australia, Auckland and Gisborne, was berthed at the Ouccn’s Wharf at 6.30 a-.in.- yesterday. The. advent of the big cargo-carrier - excited a great deal of interest in commercial and shipping circles. As .regains'appearance and fitting* she is equal, if notsnperior, to tiny purely cargo steamer that has yet visited the port. Sir Charles Laing. of .Sunderland, has constructed the big steamer on lines that raise the vessel somewhat above the accepted type of modern ocean "tramp." Hi this respect the speed of the vessel has bean attended to, as proved by her completion of her first voyage from New York to Melbourne in 50" days. The Toinoa.na is capable of steaming au average of II knots on a consumption of 55 tons of Newcastle coal per 24 hours. Her registered tonnage is not nearly.so much as one would imagine on looking over the vessel, for she is only 3904 tons net and 5969 tens gross. She has five holds capable of carrying- 11,000 tons of cargo, and three of the holds have insulated accommodation for 100,000 cartaaes of mutton. Her hatches arc supplied with eleven steam winches of the most approved pattern for the rapid loading and discharge of cargo. The Tomoann is in charge of Captain Fclgate, who has assooiuled with him the following officers: —Chief, - Mr Liuklater (late Indraghiri); second, Mr Smith: third, Mr Bullock; fourth, Mr Reeves; chief engineer, Mr Gimblett; second, Mr Chappie; third, Mr Caldow; fourth, Mr Rosa: fifth, Mr Meek; chief refrigerating ' engineer, Mr Sale?!; second, Mr Gibson; stoward-tn-chargc, Mr Cootnbes. During her present stay in Wellington the Tomoana will ship equal to 7000 carcases of mutton and IC-00 quarters of beef. The steamer will leave to-day for" the Smith,.where abe will'visit Lyttelton, Dunedin and the Bluff in succession, sailing from the Bluff to Napier, and returning to. Wellington to complete her freight for London. Her approximate date of final sailing from this port is October 16th. Captain East; Marine Superintendent for the Tyser Company, was a passenger by the Tomoana - , DEATH OF A SHIPMASTER; On the arrival of the barque-Lo-ah Evan at Port Adelaide on "the 23rd September, it;was'reported that her master. Captain T. Tait, hod died nine days before making port. On September 14, ' when the-vessel had passed-the Louwin. the ..captain came on deck at 6.30,p,.m., gave necessary orders, and had breakfast at 8. He then took observations. for longitude, and went to bis cabin, ordering' the, steward to bring him a. bottle of stout. Shortly afterwards the steward board the captain call faintly, and going to his cabin, found him lying under his desk breathing heavily, and unable to speak. The steward raised him. and put him to bed, but bo never spoke afterwards; though he once rolled out of his bunk. When the chief officer went to -take the ■midnight watch ho. found the captain dead and cold- A pcst-mortcin examination.revealed Hie fact that death was caused by apoplexyWEATHER ON THE WEST COAST. HEAVY WESTERLY GALE. ■ Owing to a very heavy westerly gale at New Plymouth yesterday extra-precautions had to- be taken iu berthing the Rotoiti, and in keeping her safely moored. The Takapuna, from , Nelson, was unable to go alongside'until the Rotoiti had taken her departure. The Konieri. which had been unable to cross the Waitara bar. put' into New Plymouth for "shelter. .There was still a. strong westerly gale blowing until Stephen Island was readied'on the -Rotoiti’s trip -down. The,'steamer Buteshire, now in the stream, is waiting for the gale to moderate before she loaves for the 'Wanganui roadstead. The Ha-upiri was still detained:at Greymoutb yesterday by bad weather,'but 1 there was a. possibility of her getting out last night,-' On account of thin delay she will come to Wellington direct from Westport. The local agents for the Tvser Company received a. telegram from Wanganui yesterday stating that the gale had not abated,, and that the work of loading the Indramayo in the roadstead was still suspended. THE BRIGANTINE STANLEY. - ' PTIT’PS ARBOtTATIOV AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Captain Nettlinaham has desna.tched a telegram from JCuaotunu to the owner. Mr Ross, stating that, there, was a, good nrosoect of floating the-brigantine Stanley if ihe services of a powerful tug were obtainable.
