MINING NOTES
There were 38,410 tons, of coal exported from the port of Westport during the month of August—Westport Coal Company, 33,638 tons; Wcstport-Cardi/r Coal Company, 4772 tons. The exports from tho v port of Greymoulh for the mouth of Adgust included 14,676 tons of coal, 681,083 superficial feet, of timber and 13,292 sleepers. A license to mine for copper has been granted by the Warden at Mayglock (the nearest Warden’s Court) to James Liddle, of Wellington, the area being 10 acres'and 22 perches, situated at Mabarahara, in tho Woodville Survey district, at an annual rental of £1 2s 6d, and a royalty of onefiftietb of the value of all specified metals. There is no booming in connection with the Hauraki goldfields at the present time, but there is a marked improvement and more assuredrconfidcuce In Ibo stability of the mines at Coromandel, Thames, * Karangahake, Waihi and Waitekauri. Fresh discoveries of an important character (says the "Mines Record") are reported from the great Waihi mine, which gives promise of being one of the most important gold mines, in. the world, if it has not at- . ready, attained to that distinction.
