The Consul for, France and the Countess de Courte have taken up their residence in Fitzherbeft terrace, where the French Consulate has also been removed. - The death is announced at the age of seventy of Mr Win. H. Jones, one of the early settlers of Wellington. He passed away, peacefully on Sunday evening. He wais horn in Trichinopoly, India, andcame to the colony in 1848 and took, up land in the Te Are flab. I He was widely known ana respected. He is survived by a widow and four sons and eight daughters. . Mr C. E. Horneman, private secretary to, the Minister for Public Works, was married by the Rev W. C. Waters at St. Peter’s Church on Saturday, to IVLss Alay Truscott, eldest daughter of Captain J. P. Truscott, of Gallo, Ceylon. The bride was dressed in a costume of dove-grey cashmere, with hat to match. She wore a handsome gold chain, the gift of the bridegroom. AlisS Olive ■ Banks was bridesmaid; and received a gold bangle as'a gift front the bridegroom. Mr Ballance attended as best man. - - -,-
; Air Neil Galbraith, of the New Zealand Shipping' Company’s local office, was yesterday afternoon presented with a hand-some'-,maf hie clock by the .staff. The base, of the .clock bears a silver plate, oh which is inscrjbadcf-—“Presented to- Air N. Galbraith, on.tlie occasion of his marriage,; by' l the staff of the New Zealand Shipping Company, l Wellington, branch, October 11th; 1899.” Mr G. Hunt, accountant; made the presentation .in- a felicitous speech, which was suitably acknowledged by the recipient! : Air A. D. Somerville, local manager for the Bank of- Now Zealand, who returned ftom a. visit, to Fiji by' tlie Upolu, on Sunday' evening, has benefited greatly, in - health by the. trip. Prior to- his present appointment he was manager of the bank at Suva, where he was very; well lenbwh and respected. Before returning to New, Zealand he wqs entertained lit a complimentary dinner at the, Club Hotel, i.Suya,, on the evening of the 21st ult. ITTie oliair was occupied by Air J. H. Garrich, who proposed the health of- the guest in complimentary terms; In responding Mr’ Somerville drew attention to-,- the: markedr improvement so clearly visible in the business of the colony (Fiji), and expressed the hope that the retnni of prosperity would be permanent. ,o- t „
