WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. The first meeting of the newly-elected stewards of the Wellington Racing Club was held yesterday afternoon, Mr T. G. Macarthy (president) in the chair. The programmes of the Lower Valley Jockey Club’s Meeting, December 26th and 27th, with stakes amounting to £615, and the Masterton Racing Club’s Summer Meeting on December 7th and Btn, with stakes amounting to £875, being in order, were passed. It was decided to intimate to the former club that it would be desirable in future* to confine its meeting to a oneday fixture, and a recommendation to* that effect will be made to the next conference. It was also decided to ask the club to strike, out of its present programme the saddle race, and substitute some other

event more in keeping Witn the present standard of racing. It was decided to remove the disqualification from R. illcPhee, wnich he incurred by taking part in an unregistered meeting at Greytown in 1898; but. the stewards declined to accede to the request to remove the disqualification from the mare “ Sweet Oil,” which ran at the same meeting. * At the request of the secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association to contribute, the sum of £lO was contributed out of the trainers’ and jockeys’ fund towards the purchase of an up-to-date horse ambulance waggon, which would be available for conveying injured persons from the racecourse to the hospital when required. . The Chairman officially announced that Messrs W. E. joidwill and Grace had been elected as delegates to represent the country clubs on the Metropolitan Committee for the Wellington district. The usual subsidy of £lO 10s was voted towards the publication of the New Zealand Turf Register for the past season. It was decided that in future all short races, at any rate, be started by a starting machine, and the secretary was directed to obtain particulars of a suitable patent. " •

The following committees for the ensuing year were set up;—Programme, Dr James, Messrs Baldwin, Scales and Harbroe; course, Messrs Ames, Baldwin, Saunders, “Wilkins and iuoorhouse; finance and privileges; Messrs Harbroe, Harcourt, Baldwin and Moofhouse; building, Messrs Moorhouse, Harcourt, Wilkins and Ames; trainers’ and jockeys’ licenses, Messrs Harbroe and Scales. The president is chairman and member of all committees, ex officio. The meeting adjourned till next Monday, when several of the above committees will submit their reports.

PRESS ASSOCIATION. MELBOURNE, Monday. The following horses have been scratched-for tne Caulfield Cup :—Contrast, Cranberry and Hiki (late Nuka). In the betting market Contrast has risen to favourite with Cranberry for the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 7.' AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. AUCKLAND, Monday. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, - the Chairman said the year had been a fairly prosperous one. ■ ■ The spring meeting resulted- in a loss of "about £IOO, due to the fact that the club had not had a* spring'meeting for several years, and many horses were not in a condition, to compete. For 'the summer meeting the club increased the Stakes to £ll9O, and a profit of £IOO resulted. - The stakes were also increased for .the autumn meeting, and a profit of about £4OO resulted. The sum of £7lB in the shape of sundry debtors was written off, most of which .was unrecoverable, many of "the defaulters' having left the country and others being bankrupt. Re• ference was made by the chairman to the establishment of the New Zealand Trotting Association, 'and to the decision of the Auckland Trotting Club to give it a year’s trial. The retiring committee urged the institution -of a Sires Produce Stakes on future programmes, and recommended that a race for £SO be placed on the next summer programme for two and three-year-olds. Sires’ produce races had been arranged for two-year-olds to Ke 1 contested in 1900, 1901 and 1902, for stakes of £75. £IOO and £l6O respectively. The club recognised that breeders of trotters wanted encouragement, therefore these races should bo established. The cash in bank and in hand amounted to £l3B, and sundry debtors owed £655. ; GALLOPS AT HASTINGS.

NAPIER, Monday. Fine weather favoured the winding-v.p gallops at Hastings this morning, tho work being principally confined to sprints ing. Rubin and Aquatic put in a solid circuit, galloping well. Miss Delavel went two rounds, finishing the last six furlongs fast in pleasing stvle. Lady Helen, and El Draquo jumped off at the six furlongs post, but the .latter.pulled up after traversing half the journey; bleeding, from the nose. Whitirea and Kiritca galloped a circuit in taking manner. Seahorse and The Labourer galloped six furlongs, the Guineas candidate having an advantage at the finish.The Frenchman, Tirade and Bird pfTPassage together covered six furlongs, the first-named finishing in front. Sirocco land Clack-na-Cuddin l''aversed a similar distance in a satisfactory maimer. The weather is somewhat unsettled for to-morrow’s races-.'
