The Now York “Herald” declares that British capitalists already control the chief industries of Cuba. MISSIONARIES IN DANGERSHANGHAI, Monday. The fanaticism against missionaries which exists among the Chinese in the Kien-ning district, province of Fo-kien. is spreading. Placards have been posted offering rewards of a thousand dollars each for the heads of missionaries. DESERTING THE KHALIFA. CAIRO, MonT;v. In consequence of the death of Air James Harcourt Smith, 8.A., Government Geologist, pressure is beingbrought to bear by the Government to induce Mr Alexander Alontgomery to return to tho colony from New Zealand to take charge of the Geologist’s Office, as he is fully conversant with the mining fields of this colony. GALE OFF SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Tuesday. A heavy south-easterly gale is blowing, accompanied by a rough sea, FLOODS IN VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, Tuesday. Heavy rain has fallen throughout the colony, causing many rivers to be flooded. A number of low-lying township!are partially submerged, and considerable damage has been done to property and crops. Ho staled that his vessel, a sailing craft named the Figaro, left Barcelona on March 4th for Tahiti, under command of Captain. Domingo. Five of the crew intended to go pearling, but tinvessel w-as wrecked last Alonday non' the Burdekin river. It is suspected that the man is a French escapee from New Caledonia. THE PERSIAN GULF. LONDON, Tuesday. Both, the Russian and the Pirsian authorities have again denied that negotiations are taking place for the session or lease of a port in the Persian Gulf to Russia.
