ADMIRAL DEWEY’S HOME-GOING.

A BRITISH SEND-OFF. MANILA, Monday. Admiral Dewey, commander of the United States Squadron in these w aters, has left the Philippines on his return to America. The crews of the British warships at Manila cheered heartily when the'American cruiser Olympia with the departing Admiral on board passed them. [Admiral Dewey lias been in command of the American Squadron at. the Philippines since the beginning of the war with Spain. He has fallen into ill-health, and has asked to bo relieved of che position. Cominodore Watson has been appointed to succeed him. Admiral, Dewey has refused to enter the political life of America, and a post of Naval Adviser to President McKinley has been created for him.] [Recently Rear-Admiral Dewey was raised to the rank of admiral. There have been only two other full admirals in the U.S. Navy, namely, Admirals Farragut and Porter. They each received a salary of £2600 per annum. Admiral Dewey will doubtless receive the same salary. As rear-admiral his salary was £ISOO a year sea-pay and £llOO when ashore. As full admiral he will draw just over £2OO a month. He will have little to -do, but his powers will be that of a monarch. Had he been a .full admiral when the German Admiral von Diederichs was making himself so annoying at Manila, Rear-Admiral Dewey could have precipitated a Avar between the United States and Germany without consulting anybody at Washington. As soon as he returns to America, the hero of Manila will be in peril of being petted and lionised and feted to death.]
