PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE.

The first -meeting of the Public Works Committee of tho ' City. Council since the holidays was held on Tuesday. Present— The Mayor (Mr J. 11; Blair) and Councillors Anderson, vVilleeton, Lingard, McGill, Barber, Izard, Smith, Luke and Devine. A request was'made by-Mr iff. Loudon chat -an obstruction in lloxburgh street ’ should bo removed; and a footpath formed. The committee decided that Mr Loudon shiuld be, permitted to remove the obstruc- « tion at his own expense ■ln triply to a latier .from‘Mr 'IV Ward, it was decided to say that the question ej lormiug a footpath in Stanley street woub; ho considered when the estimates for tl © year were dealt with. ■ ' Complaint was made by Mr' J. Heard that he could not-obtain a permit for the erection-of a building oil Mount street. Ho admitted he had made a mistake in proceeding with the erection of the house without first obtaining the City Surveyor’s permission. It was decided that the City Solicitor should bo instructed to prosecute Mr Heard for-having infringed the building by-laws. The committee refused to grant an. application ma la by Messrs Duller and Anderson to on-ct fuur houses in Slant field street in its present form,, as it was of ipioion that it would not bo in tho public interest to have so many buildings erected on the section.

Permission to er n ct a temporary building on the site of their furniture factory off Dixon street, - recently destroyed by fire, was asked for by Messrs Flock ton and Co. ft was decided to grant pevmtssipn for a temporary building from month to month. Messrs Cloio, Fitz Gerald and Richmond applied, on behalf of Messrs Hickson and Palmer, for permission to erect a photographic gallery on -the top of their new premises at the corner of Harris street and Jervois quay.
