WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION.
London, January 11. Mr Benjamin Pickard, President of tho Miners’ Federation of Great Britain, addressing a conference on federal tion, said the Workmen’s Compensation Act had been fruitful of litigation and ill-feeling, and it must be amended. Received January 13, 12.40 am. London, January 12. The Miners’ Federation has resolved to urge that amendments be made in the Compensation Act so as to include all trades, and the omission of the clause relating to wilful and serious misconduct.; It also recommends the immediate payment of compensation and the abolition of the “contracting out ” system. The Workmen’s Compensation Act passed by the Imperial Parliament in 1897, makes the employer liable for injury caused to those in his employment by any accident arising out of that employment, only excepting those caused by tho "serious and wilful misconduct of the workman himself.” Though contracting out is allowed, no scheme is legal unless passed by the Registrar of Friendly Societies, and any scheme is liable to revision at tho termination of limited periods.
