Mr M. MilJer, of the Union Company’s shore staff at Wellington, has been appointed second engineer of Messrs J. Horsley and' Co.’s steamer Gertie. Daring tho last few weeks tho Hula has undergone an overhaul of a comprehensive nature. The plates, from the boUing to tho bulwarks of tho bridge-dock, have been entirely renewed, new berths have been fitted In the chief officer's and engineer's cabins, which havo also been enamelled. The saloon has been thoroughly renovated, and is now bright and clean in tho glory of artistic graining and enamel. This enamel, now used so extensively for ship decorating purposes, has a beautiful. hard, glistening surface, upon which repealed washings havo no effect. Tho Huia is to leave for Wanganui to-day, and passengers by her will appreciate tho efforts put forth for their comfort. The lengthy passage of the Brunner from Westport was occasioned by a north-easterly gale experienced between Westport and Gape Farewell, which delayed tho steamer several hours. She returns to Westport to-day. The Maria on her present trip will transfer 20 head of cattle from Patea to Picton.

Tho barque Norfolk Island has been chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company to load wool, &0., in the colony for London. The Now Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Kaikoura is duo hero about the end of the week from Lyttelton and Napier. She completes her loading here, and leaves for London on November 3rd. Tho ship Ploione will be berthed at the Wool Jetty on Saturday, and will at once commence loading for London. Ithas been definitely fixed that the barque G. M. Tucker will load white pine timber here for Sydney. Mr Peter Bartholomew, of Levin, is to supply the cargo. The Parcora left Greyraonth for Wellington last evening with a load of coal for tho New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Kaikoura, Southern produce by tho Kini consists of -2CG tons for Wellington and GO tons for Westport, Captain Rolls reports a strong north-east galo, with very high head seas, from Lyttelton to Kaikoura, tho wind gradually decreasing as the vessel neored tho Heads. Prom G p.ni. until midnight on Monday the steamer only averaged four knots an ETdur, and being very light she rolled and pitched in the high sea in an alarming manner. Mr Norton, who came out to the colonies as fourth officer of the steamer Duke of Devonshire for tho express purpose of Joining the Union Company, is third officer. GOVERNMENT STEAMERS. Tho Hlnomoa loaves for East Island about 8 o’clock this morning, and will work tho Somes Island and Pencarrow lighthouses en route. She then visits Awanui, returning to Napier to discharge rouio sleepers (now on board), taking in railway iron at that port for tho Bluff. The Tutanekai left Dunedin yesterday morning and is due hero about noon to-day, THE SHAW, S A VIOL AND ALBION COMPANY. Tho following arrangements, subject to alterations, have been mad* respecting tho movements of tho Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s steamers Mnmari and Maori. The first-named remains at Wellington until tho Bth prox. sailing bonce for Gisborne, Napier and Lyttelton (her final port). Meanwhile she will lie in the stream. Tho Maori, now laid up at Lyttelton, will proceed shortly to Napier. She is due hero about November 11th, and is timed to sail for London about the 17th. Ky tho time tho Tokomaru (duo from London on Saturday) is ready to receive cargo in any great quantity the wool should bo coming in freely, A NEW STEAMER FOR THE COASTAL TRADE. It will bo remembered that Captain Romcril. of the Kahu, recently visited England for the purpose of purchasing a suitable steamer for the coastal trade for Messrs Richardson and Co., of Napier. His mission was fruitless, as was also tho visit psid to Sydney by the same gentleman and Mr Kelly, engineer of tho Kahu. As the steamer is urgently needed for the rapidly developing trade of tho East Coast, an order has been placed at Preston. England (the place where is now being constructed the steamer for Messrs Neill and Ramsay, of Dunedin, for tho Invercargill trade) for the construction of a steamer on lines that will leave no doubt as to her success as a coastal trader. She is to be UOft tong, with a carrying capacity of 300 tons, and will ba fitted for tho accommodation of 27 passengers. Her arrival in the colony may be looked r or about the middle of next year.
