The Queen of the South is to make a trip to the East Coast stations with winter provisions, probably on Saturday next, The schooner Falcon has been chartered to load produce at Lyttelton f-r Wellington. The Tutanekai arrived from Hokianea early yesterday morning with the members of the permanent force who were despatched to tho recent native trouble at Rawone. She left during the day for the Brothers lighthouse and South. On hoc return the broken cable across Cook Strait is to be repaired. Tho 43 hours’ trip of the Herald from Lyttelton was occasioned by encountering the lull force of the north-westerly gale which raged bore on Tuesday. After getting half-way across the Strait, Captain Coulson thought it advisable to put back for shelter to Cape Campbell, where the steamer remained for somo hours. Her oargo consisted of a'O tons for Wellington, 133 for New Plymouth, 100 for Groymouth and 70 for Hokitika. The New Plymouth portion was transhipped to the Kotoiti, thus enabling the Herald to sail direct for Greymouth last evening. The barque Albany, which left New York for Wellington on February 13kb, has on board 850 tons of general cargo, including CGOO cases of kerosene. Tho Albany is a vessel of 499 tons burden, and is commanded by Captain Lehmann. Messrs W. and O. Turnbull and Co. are the local agents. The Galrloah arrived from (Jnehunga anl New Plymouth early yesterday morning, and was taken up on the Patent Slip for a cleaning and painting and inspection. She leaves this afternoon for New Plymouth and Onohunga. The Huia and Manama sail for Wellington on tho first opportunity. Tho Huddart-Parkcr liner Westralia Is duo from the South botrveon 13 and I o'clock this afternoon, and is timed to leave for Sydney via Napier, Gisborne and Auckland at 7 p m. The Kotoiti’s cargo from New Plymouth included 82 boxes of butter for local consumption and 1190 boxes for transhipment to Australia. Before leaving for Lyttelton yesterday afternoon tbo Hotomahana moved over to the Railway Wharf and shipped 11 bullocks. Tbo Opawa made the trip from Blenheim to Wellington in 6> hours yesterday. Captain Eokford reports seeing three good-sized whales in the Strait and a number of off Sinclair’s Head. Tho Walkaro loft tho company’s wharf, Sydney, at 2 35 p.m. on Saturday last, clearing tbo Heads at 8.15 p.m. Capo Farewell was abeam at 9.50 a.ra. yesterday. Strong north-west and westerly winds and 'high sea, with squally weather, prevailed on the trip across the Tasman Sea. Her oargo consists of 712 tons (including 922 oases fruit), 237 tons of which are for Wellington (including 419 oases of fruit). Tho Wnlkare leaves for the South, Hobart and Melbourne this afternoon. In the Ooliatb, launched yesterday at Chatham, says the Dally News of March 2itb, we faavo certainly a tremendous engine of war. She is of the Renown class, and she carries a central ** citadel,'’ armoured on both sides and fore and aft, to protect her against fire from any quarter. The citadel has, moreover, a protective deck of stool. Her heavier guns fire shot of 6501 b weight, with a charge of 1661 b of cordite for each gun. Taking all her larger guns together, and including the twelve quick-firers, she might deliver In two minutes about 31,0001 b of shot, or at the rate of seven tons a minute. And this leave* out of account the fire from the 15 machine guns. Her speed under natural draught is 18J knots, as against the 174 of the Majestic under foroed draught. Nothing is said as to her coal consumption, a most important point. In this respect the Powerful, with its much-lauded Belleville boilers, seems to have been a bit of a failure. She was designed to run at 22 knots, but it has been shown that if she attempted to do anything o! the sort she would exhaust her coal bunkers in less than 48 ■*" hours. Even at 11 knots she could not keep tho sea very long without renewing her supplies. Tho old warship Nelson (not the former flagship) was towed from Melbourne to Sydney last week by Huddart, Parker’s tug Eagle. The Court of Marino Inquiry at Melbourne sat on the 17th inst., and delivered its decision in connection with the Edina-Manawatu collision. Pilot Blanchard was acquitted on the charge of misconduct, but Captain Forbes, of the Edina, was found guilty of misoonduo, amounting to gross misconduct, and his certificate was suspended for •12 ujonths- Captain Forbes was also ordered to pay i>3llos on account of the expenses of investigation.

NEW VESSEL FOR THE INTERCOLONIAL TRADE. Mr George Nicol, of Auckland, has completed the Enrchise of the steel barquentlne Margarita at ondoa (or tho intercolonial trade, the price being about £IOO9. Captain George Davies, late of the barquentine Neptune, proceeds to London to take charge of the vessel, which will probably load cargo there for Auckland direct. The Margarita was built at Sunderland, in 1893, and is 494 tons register, carrying 855 tons of cargo on a draught of I2*9ft. She is classed 100 A 1 at Lloyd’s, Her length is 172 ft; breadth of beam, 301 ft; depth of bold, 18'5fc.
