THE TURF.
OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB. SECOND DAT. By Oue Special Repoeter. It is said that Borne people do not care how they take their pleasures. This is undoubtedly correct in bo far as racing is concerned, as followers of the turf will attend a good meeting, wet or dry, and enjoy it even though a drenching rain is falling. The attend j.uoe at the uoaai Hack Meeting yesterday was no .so largo as on the previous day, a fact which may be attributed to the bad weather prevailing. A goodly number of Wellington sports put in an appearance, ns well as a large number from the outlying districts. Kain fell the previous night, and the going was very soft, which militated against good times being made Tho racing was, on the whole, good. I’he publio appeared to be fairly on the mark, except in the last race, in which Mayday (whose victory was forecast in Tee Times) paid 12 guineas. There was a large field in tho opening event . This fell to Tommy Atkins, who had a very com fortable victory from Hon George. The Otaki Cup winner. Bush Rose, displayed great dash of foot in the Banfurly Stakes, which he won from Sing Song. The winner carried much more weight than he, did on the day previous, and showed racehorse form. Uhlan ran well, but the mad knocked him clean out, and be collapsed before the straight was entered. The winner paid £5 17a —a very acceptable dividend. They say that nothing stops a good horse, and Marina's win under list Tib demonstrates that fact. In the hurdles the issue looked doubtful in the straight, but Marina’s great paoe saw her through and she won by a length and a half. This made her third win daring the meeting. She also started in a flat race, the Jubilee Handioap, in which she ran third. One of the most consistent mares at the meeting was Sing Song, who ran splendidly on the first day, and won the Winter Oats Handicap yesterday. It was an absolute “ moral ” bar accidents, and Tui’s daughter won practically as she liked. There was a large number of scratches for the Railway Handicap, for which half-a-dozen started. It was the greatest of soft things for Oracle, the Castoff horse, who simply romped in. Babin, beaten by Oracle the day previous, annexed the Stewards' Welter in racehorse fashion, and an inquiry was instituted by the stewards in. regard to alleged inconsistency. After consideration it was 'deoided to adjourn the matter, the club impounding both the stake and the machine money. A dividend of 12 guineas was paid over the-last race of the day on Mayday, a coastal mare, who defeated a good field, Whario panning second. Tho sum of J8419S was passed through the machines, controlled by Mr Joseph Ames, tho total for the two days being -CIO,IGB. Bellowing are the results Teial Handioap, of 50 sots; second, 10 BOVS. Notes by “ Silvebspub.” There will be very good Helds at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting at Miramar on Wednesday next. when the racing public are promised excellent • sport. The acceptances disclose six in the Trial Handicap, six in the Wellington Trotting Club Handicap, five in the Pony, seven in the Ki birnie Handicap, eight in the Electric, seven in the Selling Race, eight in the Dash, and nine in the Final Handicap. There are a number of good trotters engaged at the meeting, including representatives from Auckland, Napier, Palmerston Napier and Christchurch, A number of those engaged won and trotted prominently at the reoent Canterbury Trotting Club’s meeting. The committee of the olub has completed all arrangements in commotion with the gathering, and it is expected that the function will be a great success. The totaliaators will be under the control of Mr Joseph Ames. The telegraphed dividend paid on Viva (.£l7B 18s) at the Canterbury Trotting Club’s meeting this week turns out to be correct. Mr Buokland did not back Viva, and apparently did not expeot his mare to win. She was totally neglected in the machine, the result being a big dividend. A fine field of 20 remained in the Auckland Grand National Hurdle Eaoo on acceptance night, and the prospective winner is not easy of selection. St. Simon had to decline his engagement owing to lamhess, and,‘ Plain Bill, on the same mark, is not to be sent up. Missfire, the Hastings horse, is now head of the list, but I do not think he can give an animal like Dante a stone were the latter in his best form. It oonld not be expected that Prosser would start Tbriki with list 21b ; he has a far better chance in the Steeplechase. Umalopogaas and St. Hilda are also absentees, but Miss Nelson is left in, and with list is entitled to great respect. An animal who gave promise of blossoming into something out of the ordinary is Nor’-west, hut he tailed on a oonpleot occasions when it was thought he had a soft thing. Whether be will show better form at this meeting is a matter for conjecture. He certainly ought to beat Levanter at a difference of three pounds, albeit the latter is reported to be in great nick just now. The Steeplechase, however, may prove to be more congenial to his taste. Tally-ho is put down as an almost certain starter ; we have seen what aha is capable of, and wa also know the worth 'of the two stable mates, Dummy and Muscatel, who hays nice handy weights in XOat 91b and lOst 61b respectively. Rex has been knocked ontiu favour of Levanter i Tronbadonr j is also missing, while Vanish ’ got injured recently np Wanganni way, and had to be destroyed. This was very hard Inok for his owner, who recently refused a stiff price for Jo’s son. There are three on the lOst mark—Torpina, Voltigenr and Opai, and I have a preference for the latter, who gave ns a taste of his quality a while back at Napier Park, where he won a couple of races. There are nine others in the list, including The Friar, who is well in with 9at 121 b if he is fast enough, and Opou, the Gisborne horse, who is related to Hopgarden, annexed this taoo in 1596. Narrowing the field down to three, I take Opai, Tally-ho andNor’-west. The Great Northern'Steeplechase, ran over three miles and a halt, boasts of a field of 21, with Levanter at the head ot the list with the troublesome burden of 12stl01b, Captivator’s sou is giving away as mnoh as 251 b to his nearest opponent, Mias Nelson, the intermediate horses Mutiny, Plain Bill,, Missfire and St. Simon having declined their engage-
ment. A number oi those engaged also in the Hurdles, inn previously. include Levanter, Miss Ni‘Lo*s Tallyho. The Friar,Dummy, Nor’-Westaml Muscatel. Nor - West is a maiden between tho flag?,but is a reputedly good jumper. Dummy is bound to run -l great race and eo ie the little Friar, who is far better than most people belie?© him to be.
