EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board held its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. Present— Messrs J, E. Blair (chairman), W. W. Mo Cardell, J. Young, A. W. Hogg, M.HR., F. Bradey, J. Bobertaou, E. Feiab and Bev J Paterson. It was reported that there yvas a credit of .£515 17s 8d to the maintenance fund and a debit of £3365 16s Id on the buildings account. The payments required were —Maintenance, £3470 12s 2d ; buildings, £64 6s lid. The Chairman said the truant officers report showed that 13 school districts had been visited and 118 children who were in bad attendance or not attending at all had been induced to go to school. Mr D. Bedingfield (Paikakariki) was granted a month’s further leave of absence. Miss E. Carter was appointed pupil teacher at Petone School as recommended by the committee. Miss Ida Kenny, Eintoul street School, was granted a short leave of absence, for family reasons. The resignation of MrW. G. L® w ' s > as second assistant. Mount Cook Boys’ School, was accepted, and consideration of that of Miss Annie Black, of Mangamaire School, was held over until next meeting. Vacancies on the Terrace School Committee were filled up by the appointment of the Eev J. E. Glasson and Mr T. E. James, and Messrs E. Knight and G. Manson were appointed to the Kaiwaxra Committee. . The Chairman said a petition had been received for tho romoval of the school from the State Farm, Levin, to Wereroa. The building belongs to the Labour Department, which proposes that the Board should buy the school, and that the expenses of the removal, &0., should be taken into consideration when it comes to be valued. The Board agreed to this being done. It was decided to supply a stove for the Kaiwarra school. An application from the Otaki committee for an addition to the plans of a teacher’s residence was agreed to, the extra cost not to be more than £2O. The Greytown committee recommended that a room in the old Greytown school be leased to tho United Greytown Football Club. The recommendation was adopted. With regard to the petition for a school at Island Bay, further information as to the necessities of the district was supplied, together with particulars of suitable sites. The chairman was authorised to deal with the matter. , The Chairman reported that he did not. think there was any ground for disputing the legality of the election of school committees at Newman and Levin, and the Board accordingly declared the elections to be legal and valid. The carpenter reported that ne estimated the cost of repairs to the Thorndon School residence at £3O.
