“ THE U.\ION JACK IN SONG.” Mr Durward Lely’s pitriitia entertainment, “The Union Jack,” was received at the Opera House last night by an audience that was both numerous and enthusiastic. Outstanding items were the Scotch tenor a singing of “ The Death of Nelson ” and ‘ The Star-Spangled Banner.” Each of these songs was received with anticipatory applause, doubled and trebled in the intervals between the voises, and culminating in an ovation after the finale. Mr Lely explained that bo gave the representative national anthem of the United States because he thought it would be interesting at a time when an AngloAmerican alliance was in the air. Ho had no feeling in the matter, and would sing the Spanish national anthem if he knew it. Iho audience endorsed the sentiments of the song of “ the land of the free and the home of the brave ” in no uncertain manner. Of Miss Elly Fuchs’ contributions the roost notable was the Ernst " Concerto,” in which the girl-violinist fascinated her hearers with wonderful harmonic effects. , Mr Durward Lely, who is naturally loth to leave a oity where he has been so well received, announces an extra entertainment at popular prices for Thursday evening. Although he has' attracted large audiences, there are many thousands of people fond of hearing good singing who have not heard him, and who will read with pleasure the intimation that the admission to this farewell entertainment will bo one shilling to all parts of the theatre, except the dress circle. The chief features of the programme, which is unusually attractive, are advertised ; but it may be mentioned that an interesting novelty will be Fraulein Elly Fuchs’ performance of Vieuxtemps’ celebrated fantasia on the American national air “Yankee Doodle,’ the only humorous composition which the gifted young artist will have played iu Wellington.
MR W. B. CADZOW’S CONCERT. The Skating Bink was packed last evening, when an admirable entertainment was given nnder the direction of Mr W. B. Cadzow, the well-known tenor singer. Before the programme was begun Mr Cadzow announced that owing to the heavy gale raging during the day the band of the flagship Boyal Arthur would be nnable to appear, as it was an impossibility to land the instruments, valued at between sC3OO and £3OO, in the face of tho heavy sea running. As evidence that the suggestion was genuine, Mr Cadzow read a letter signed by Commander C. E Dioken giving that body full permission to appear last evening. Signor Bellizzi, the bandmaster, however, was present to support the apology, and daring the evening he contributed several violin solos in a masterly stjle. His opening items were Wieniawski’s lively mazurka and Mascagni s charming intermezzo from ' “ L’avallaria Enatidana,” which were loudly encored. He then gave a fantasia on “ Alios, where art thou,” which was excellently played. Hia second number waa “La Traviata.” Mr Cadzow was heard to advantage in “The Queen’s Letter,” but woe even bettor in the encore number “The Minstrel Boy.” He sang Mascagni’s “ For All Eternity ” in the second part of the programme, and was enthusiastically encored. Miss Taualay, who had risen from a sick bed to keep her engagement, sang sweetly, her items being “By the Fountain ” and “ An Old Love Dream.” One of the cleverest “ turns ” of the evening was that of Mr G. P. Hoskins, who sketches with lightning rapidity on a blackboard line pictures of all the best-known celebrities, those of the Queen, the lata Mr Gladstone (drawn upside down) and the Premier receiving moat applause, Mr H. Whitehead and Miss Dora Moatyn supplied the comic element, the lady being particularly clever. She waa imperatively recalled for her “ Washerwoman ” sketch, giving a parody on “ Say Aa Kevoir,” which created shrieks of laughter. The programme wound up with a smart little comedietta entitled “ Mistaken Identity,” brightly acted by Miss Mostyn and Mr D. L D.ilziel. The accompaniments to the various songs and instrumental solos were tastefully played by Madame Cadziw.
