THE TURF.

OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB’S . , MEETING. FIRST DAT. Br oub Special Hepohteb. Meteorological vicissitudes must always be among Ibe contingencies to which holidays are liable, and yesterday morning it locked gloomy for the Otaki gathering-the beet hack race meeting in the colony. _ Although dull and threatening, however, rain kept off all day ; the attendance wae unusually large, the number present being in the vicinity of 3000. Viritors from Wellington, Palmerston North, Wanganui, the Coast and Hawke’s Bay were present—evidence of the popularity of the meeting, which is solely run by Maoris, whose ciub gives tip-top prizes, and deducts nothing from the stakes for ‘ expenses,” Groat improvements have been effected on the course by the club, the nature of which have already been described in The Times. A presa-ro ,m has not yet been provided, however ; why, it is impossible to say. There was an unusual amount of speculation on the totaliaatora. There wore three in all, under the supervision of Mr Joseph Ames, and the sum of -ECI7O was put through daring the day—an astonishing sum when one comes to think cf the character of the meeting. The two refreshment booths controlled by Mr A. Crossey did a great business, as also the luncheon room, which was crowded for hours. The Otaki Maori Brass Band gave a programme of music daring the day which was greatly appreciated. So far as the racing is concerned there were two “doubles ” annexed, and both were well anticipated by bickers. The two hurdle races the Trial and Birthday obstacle events—were an absolute gilt to Marina, who is by Son’-wester out of Birbelle. Marina was a maiden performer, but she showed that she could jump and was fast on the flat. l‘ho result was that she lost her fields onb jth occasions. Another horse to win a doable was Tupahi, a son of Wapiti (Maxim’s half brother). Ho faiily romped homo in both the Maiden and the Welter, albeit ho had some luck in the In.-.t-named event, in which a bad start was effected

Tne Otaki Cap, for which the stake was 120 sova, was a most interesting contest Contrary to expectations, Whario. Oracle and Guardfish (all of whom ran later in the day) were scratched. Bush Hose settled down favourite at the finish, and eventually won, but Ruby Twist made a groat effort and only got defeated by a neck. Uhlan ran well, as did Sing Song, who secured third position, fha last-named ran a great mare in the Flying, in which she carried top weight, and fought out the finish with Guardfish, a dead heat being proclaimed. The Champion Stakes was reduced to a match between Rubin, Oracle and Pistolgrip, and Oracle paid 5a under £5.

The racing wont off without a single hitch. The duties of acting secretary were carried out most satisfactorily by Mr Pringle, who proved the right man in the tight place. Following is a 7'esume of the racing : Trial Hurdles, ofSOsova; second, lOsovs

A good start was signalled, but some of the contestants were slow to move. Tommy Atkins went to the front and led round into the straight, followed by. Uhlan, Bush Rose third. This waa about the order as the field swept past the stand, with Stockade forming one of the rear division. As they went to the back Tommy Atkins had a two lengths* lead of Bush Eosp, -Trask lying third. Befqro the turn was jroaoftej the black jacket qn Te Hapuku was seen to move up ou the outside. In tho straight 'i ommy Atkins faded, leaving Bush Rose in command. The race now appeared fci be a certainty for the Torpedo representative, who swung away with a good lead } but Ruby Twist came along with a rattle under tho whip, and caught the leader.
