THE WAR.

MOVEMENTS OF THE RIVAL SQUADRONS.

Ov Telegraph.—Press Association.— Copyright Washington, May 16.

Some American experts believe that the Spanish fleet is steering for Cienfuegos, in the South of Cuba, bat is not likely to reach that port before the American fleets under Admiral Schley and Captain Sampson have ellected * junction. Others interpret the delay of tho Spanish fleet at Curasao as evidencing an intention on the part of the Spaniards to intercept the American battleship Oregon (10,288 tons) and tho gunboat Marietta (1200 tons) on their way from San Francisco.

The cruiser Nichtheroy (7080 tons), purchased from Brasil by tho United States Government, loft Bahia on the 9th inst. for Key West.

Admiral Schley’s squadron put into Charleston. South Carolina, on Sunday, and received instructions to proceed immediately to Key West. The fleet under Admiral Cerveras, at the request of the Dutch authorities, left Curasao on Sunday.

The strategy of Admiral Cerveras and the secrecy observed as to tho movements of his squadron have disconcerted the navals exports at Washington and upset far-reaching plans.
