ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT.

A mild sensation was occasioned in town yesterday afternoon when it became known that Mr John Craig, lately manager of Te Aro House, in Cuba street, had been apprehended by Chief Detective Campbell on a charge of having stolen various sums, amounting in all to £7OO, from Te Aro House (James Smith and Co.). The arrest was effected in tho office of Mr T. Young, solicitor, and the defalcations are said to extend over a period of 18 months. On the Magistrate’s Court resuming after the luncheon adjournment, the accused was formally charged with the offence indicated, a remand, however, being asked for by Inspector Pender. Mr Young, who appeared for Craig, intimated that a satisfactory explanation of the matter could be afforded. As a matter of fact Mr James Smith (the prisoner's employer) bad seemed perfectly satisfied with the information imparted to him. Counsel objected to a remand being granted, and demanded to know on what grounds the warrant was executed. The Inspector intimated that the police were well aware of the course taken, and were perfectly warranted in their action. Detective Campbell was called, and substantiated this assertion.

Mr Haselden granted the remand asked for —till Wednesday morning. Bail was allowed in two sureties of *0250 and accused in .£SOO. Bail was forthcoming, and the sureties being approved, the accused was liberated during the evening.
