American jockeys express the belief that the Australian starting machine is responsible for the production of ill-tempered racehorses. This is another evidence of the peculiar turns the prejudice against the Australian iuventiontake, as in the Colonies the result of the operation of the machine has been to 000 l the temper of racehorses, because they are not called upon to undergo the trials at the post which the vexatious system of starting by flag produces. The Onkaparinga (3.A.) Race Meeting to be held on Easter Monday has the sum of .£2500 available for prize money. The Great Eastern Steeplechase is endowed with 1000 sovs, the Onkaparinga Cap with 500 sots. Hurdle Race 400 soys, and the Hills Railway Stakes 250 sovs. The Onkaparinga Club is the only country racing institution in Australia that can offer such a liberal programme to horse-owners. This is, of course, due to the totalisator.
