By Telegraph,—Press Association. — Copyright. London, January 11. The warship Dart, the surveying gunboat on the Australian station, will be recommissioned. A letter dated 19th December has been received from Major J. R. L. Macdonald, who was recently sent by the British Government to ascend the Elver Jub in East Africa, stating that serious fighting has taken place with the natives in Uganda, Lieutenant .Macdonald and tho Rev Mr Pilkington, a missionary, being killed. Melbourne, January 12. At the inquest on the victims of the Tarra sewer fatality, a verdict was returned to the effect that they were accidentally suffocated by poisonous gases, and that no blame was attachable to the contractors. The jury made special reference to the heroism of the late Mr Alex. Gibabn and Mr W. Gibbs, members of the rescue parties, in risking their lives in the attempt to save others. Received January 13, 12.55 a.m. London, January 11. The Daily Chronicle states that 40,000 Dervish troops are gathered at Omdurman, 20,000 at Metemneh and Shendy, and one-eighth of them are armed with rifles. Svdnev, January 12. Sir James Hector delivered a lecture before a fashionable gathering on Antarctica, or the islands of the far South.
