Preparations are being made for a big flood. , At Maryborough the low part of the town is already inundated with water to the extent of 4ft. The Grand Hotel and the wharves are submerged, and the shops and residences in the probable flood area have been cleared of all movable property. Hundreds of houses in South Brisbane have been flooded, and tho residents have fled. The river is still rising rapidly. At 11 o’clock this morning boats were rescuing and convoying people about the streets. _ Received January 12, 9.50 p.tn. Brisbane, January 12. At South Brisbane this morning pitiable scenes were witnessed. The houses were standing 3ft under water. The loss is not so great as last time, owing to the timely warning. The flood invaded North Brisbane today. All the low-lying parts between Bnlimbo and Breakfast Creek were inundated. Received January 13, 12.65 a.m; Brisbane, January 12. Tho river is close to the 1890 level. Two persons are reported to have been drowned at Toowong. THE FRENCH ON THE UPPER NILE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. — Copyright. London, January 11. The Paris correspondent of tho Daily Mail states that M. Hanotaux, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, is aware that Captain Marchaud, in command of the French expedition at Fashoda, intends to claim the Upper Nile region on behalf of Prance, and to divert the trade of Abyssinia to Dyaluti.
