Ted Sloane, the American jockey, who has been riding- Mr James it. Keene’s horses in the big autumn handicaps in England, has been astonishing the Britishers, not only by his immense wardrobe, but also by his style of riding. When W. Sims was in England, they were almost as surprised at him as they had been at W. Donohue in a previous generation. Sloane looks for all the world like a record-breaker oh a bike. When Sloan climbed on to St. Cloud’s neck in the Cambridgeshire and laid flat, there was a general gasp of astonishment, and Conservative England stood aghast when the American was - only defeated by a head. “ Is anything wrong with your egg, Mr Gruff ? asked the landlady of the boardinghouse. —" No, madam, nothing at all,” was the reply; “but isn’t it just a little small for its age ?
