Owing to detention on the East Coast, the Oaiapere will not reach here until Friday next. The Mararoa leaves Lyttelton fox Wellington atC o’clock this evening. The Herald, which has been laid up fox an overhaul at Dunedin, will reach here next Wednesday, and will leave the same day (or New Plymouth and Greymouth. The Takapntra arrived from Onebunga and New Plymouth at 3,35 p.m. yesterday. Her cargo included about 70 bales of wool. Captain Chambers, of the Stormbird, is the latest victim of influenza; in consequence of which that steamer left for Wanganui last night in charge of the mate, Mr J. Gilbertson. Mr dotty is acting'as mate for the trip. The Upolu, after being thoroughly overhauled on the Patent Slip, came off yesterday, looking as fresh aa paint coaid make her. The new awning deck aft presents a cool and inviting appearance, and is sure to bo found of great beuoiit in the Islands among wbich she trades. Another great improvement Is (ho electric light, an advantage about which there Is no need to say anything. She has been repainted a greyish white, the colour best adapted tor her ran, and everything about the ship, whether above or below, presents a clean and smart appearance, which, combined with her excellent passenger accommodation, makes her an idsal vessel for tbe trade in which she is employed. The Upola leaves for Rarotonga and Tahiti via Auckland to-morrow. Advice has been received that the baroua River Hunter left Newcastle yesterday morning for Wellington with 500 tons of coal, consigned to Messrs Thompson Brothers and Co. An interesting invention, said to bo tbe greatest advance in water locomotion of recent years (says tbe Bfi. James Gazette), is a kind of “ waterhorse,"capable of attachment to any ordinary boat, but more particularly adapted for small vessels, such as are used for river, pleasure and sea-fishing purposes. It consists of a tiny float, in wbich is nxed the motive power operating tbe screw which propels the float and draws tbe vessel. The Nymph ” is worked either by oil or electricity, is controlled by a pair of reins like an ordinary horse, and guided in any direction, and the speed lessened or increased by both reins being pulled or slackened. It is regulated and controlled entirely from tbe passenger boat, and by the simple action of touching. a small lever will start, go half-speed ahead, full-speed ahead, stop, half-spoed astern, or fullspeed astern. It is readily stopped dead and turns in little more than its own. length. The elegance of appearance is also an attractive feature, and several artistic designs have been registered, including a swan, dolphin, mermaid, &c. The “ Nymph," recently placed on the Thames, takes tho form of a swan, and in appearance is about the same size as the natural bird. It easily palls a boat with six people at tho rate of seven miles per hour, while vibration is almost entirely absent. The Flora, from Auckland via Gisborne and Napier, arrived yesterday morning. Included in her cargo for Wellington was a large quantity of fruit, a transhipment from tho Ovalau, from the Islands, and 10,000 ft of timber. She left lor tbe South late last night. Gold to the value of £28.833 was brought up from the West Coast yesterday morning, consigned to the Bank of ,New Zealand. Westport supplied £8289 worth,' Greymouth £9770 and Hokitika £14,776. The barque Baechwood sailed for London from Gisborne early lasc week with a full cargoof wool. The Wainui since her recent overhaul is becoming a fast favourite on the West Coast-Nolsoa-Wellington trade. Oa several trips lately tho average number of passengers landed here has been over 100. though the number of permanent berths is only 90. Ou hoc last trip the passengers who joined tho steamer at Picton bad to bo content with a duck passage. The Wainui sails as usual to-night. - The many friends of Captain Rocnenl will be pleased to hear that he is fast recovering from his recent attack of illness, and that he is now able to got up. An early start was made yesterday to unload the barque Samar at tho Queen’s Wharf. Her appearance creates favourable comment among shipping people, very few vessels arriving in such a trim condition, especially after the rough trip sho experienced. Tho Ohau is loading coal at Westport foe Wellington and Napier. Tho Opawa arrived from Blenheim yesterday morning with 23 bales flax and a quantity of straw, bay, etc. The Pania, with a full load of general produce, arrived from Blenheim early yesterday morning. A recent cable message stated that the barque Northern Chief had been discovered to bo leaking badly in Newcastle Harbour. The name of the vessel should have read Northornhay. Captain Poole, of tho ferry steamer Birkenhead, was badly crushed between that steamer and tbe 1 Auckland wharf recently. The Waihi, now being used as a tender at Gisborne. is ’receiving a great deal of kudos for the smart work she is performing. Captain Shaw is still in command. The Brunner left at noon yesterday for Now Plymouth and Greymouth with produce from the 1 South. Advices received from Wanganui yesterday morning stated that tbe sea was smooth, and that tho Huia had taken one load off to tho Star of Victoria,
