HUIT COUNTY COUNCIL.
{ ELECTION 01* CHAIRMAN. j The Unit County Council held a special , meeting yesterday for the election of a i chairman, in place of the late Mr D. I Speedy. Present Councillors J. Wakeham, 0. W. Tlrown, F. lira ley, K. Bould, | 11. A. Field, 0. Brown, H. Cook and F. A. Majendio. Councillor Majendio proposed that Councillor Bradoy bn elected chairman for the remainder of the ensuing term. This was seconded by Councillor Cook, and unanimously agreed to. Councillor Bradey then took the chair, and suitably returned thanks. Councillor Majendio proposed, “That this Council desires to place on record its sorrow at the death ot Councillor David Speedy, and its appreciation of the long and faithful service rendered by him as councillor and as chairman, who for upwards of 20 years occupied a seat-at the Council table, as a conscientious and energetic servant of the ratepayers, especially of his own riding of Belmont, and affirms that his good qualities will long be remembered. The Council also wishes to <;• press Its sincere sympathy with Mrs Speedy uuu family in their affliction, and orders a copy of this resolution to be forwarded to Mrs Speedy.” ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Council was then held. The Land and Income Tax Department notified the payment of tho following subsidies upon rates: —Makara Road Board, .£43 3s 9d ; Beatoun Road Board, £2O 15a 9d. The Road Board of To Horo asked the Council to share tho cost of the bridge over the Ngatiawa stream. The estimated cost is £79 11s 2d. Tho question was loft in the hands of Councillor Field. An application from the Government Road Surveyor to be allowed to take metal from the Johnsonville quarry was granted, subject to the direction and supervision of the Inspector of Roads. Mr K. Scholes wrote asking that Mr Mason be given notice to remove timber from tho road near Belmont, and offering to take the timber as' payment for the work done in lifting tho tram line from the road. This was referred to tho chairman and inspector with authority to act. A letter from Mr W. C. Fitz Gerald, complaining of a nuisance at Ngahauranga, was referred to the Councillors for the riding and the Inspector of Nuisances. An application was received from Mr A. Robertson, of Waikanae, for the position of ranger in thi Whareroa riding. Councillor Field wss given authority to appoint Mr Robertson when and on such terms as he may deem fit. The Chairman suggested that the road round Porirua Bay should be widened in dangerous places. It was decided that the chairman and Inspector of Roads should enquire into ths matter. The inspector was instructed to prepare specifications frr the formation of about one mile of man road south of Paraparaumu, giving access to Mr Howell’s property. The InspecUr of Roads in his report stated that a new 17ft bridge had been built in Stokes' Valley and had been made 2ft higher, so that the overflow of water in flood time ihould be prevented. The amount of rates received since last meeting is £295 18s lOd. The report was adopted. Accounts anountiug to £232 16s were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned till Tiosday.
