“WELLINGTON VOLUNTEER RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING. THE CHAMPION BELT WON BY PRIVATE TURNER. The annual meeting of the above Association was completed at the Evans Bay range on Saturday last under conditions far from satisfactory to the competitors. At the commencement of the firing a. slight wind was blowingUrom.the south-east, but veered com* pletely round to the north after three or four shots had been fired, and increased in power every minute, until it caused the shootiata to use from. 20 to 24 degrees of windage at the 600 and 700 yards range. The shooting, with a few exceptions, was fairly good. Special mention may be made of Privates Turner and Guise’s scores of CO each in the Citizens’ Match (1 urner winning on the tie), and Private A. Ballinger’s score of 77 in the Champion Match. Private Turner, of the City Kifles, won the champion belt and gold medal with the good aggregate score of 258. Private 'A. Ballinger, of the Guards, who was second with 251, won Mr King’s gold medal for the best score in the Champion Match, Private Hale, of the Guards (lest year’s chauipion), being third with 245. Private C’Uridge, of the City R ; fles, won Messrs Jcnnesa and Oo.’a medal for the second best score in the Champion Match, with 65. The No. 2 team of the City Kifles won tfco first prize and silver cup m the Teams Match,the No. 1 team of the same corps winning second prize. The Champion Belt and Teams Cup arc held for one year, lieutenant Macdonald acted as range oiheer. The Association is to be congratulated on having got off a very successful meeting, and it is to bo hoped that next year a larger Humber of competitors will take part. ext year the Kelburne Kifles will probably bo having a good number of their members competing, arid they will then no doubt have a team entered to compete for the handsome teams cup. >t . * It is expected that the prizes will be paid over some time during the present week. On 1 Saturday a fatigue party had been despatched J to the ground for the purpose of erecting 1 tents, 35 of these being pitched in columns. \ At 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon the City 1 Eifles, 56 strong, under Lieutenants Snodj[ grass and Buoliolz; the Wellington Guards, numbering 46, under Lieutenant Haroourt, J and 45 of the Kelburne Rifles, under Captain • Davis and Lieutenants McDonald and Hen--1 derson, assembled at the Mount Cook 1 Barracas, and headed by 25 of the Garrison • Band, marched to the camp. Orders wore the i read out, and the companies told off to their ’ respective lines. The day’s operations during c the time the men remain under canvas will • commence at 4,30 a.m., the time being divided 1 after reveille as follows Dress for parade, 1 4.35 J drill from sto 0; breakfast at 6 ; tent inspection at 6.40. After this the men will leave for their respective employments, returning for tea at 6.45 ; they will dress at 7.15, full in at 7.30, and drill from then to 9 o’clock. The first post tatoo will sound at 9.45 and the last at 10.15, lights having to be 7 extinguished at 10.30. It will thus be seen i that plenty of good solid work has been pro. - vided for, from which the men should derive 3 considerable benefit. Major.
