DEATH AT MOUNT VIEW ASYLUM.
An inquest was held at the Wellington Hospital yesterday afternoon on the body of Michael Crane, an inmate of Mount View Asylum, aged 40 years, who died between 12 and 1 o’clock that morning. Mr Ashcroft, Coroner, conducted the Mr D. Maher being: foreman of the jury. Dr Hassell, Surgeon Superintendent of tho Asylom, during the course of his evidence, said that deceased was admitted in 1894, from Wanganni, but ho did not come under witness’ notice until 1896. was demented and infirm, and, to a certain extent, paralysed. About 12 years ago deceased was under hia care in the Wellington Hospital, suffering from a spinal complaint, and he never properly recovered. During the past two years he bad been gradually and continuously failing, and daring the past year ho suffered from frequent attacks of epilepsy. Early in October he took partly to bed. being then in a very helpless and paralytic condition, requiring constant care and attention. The cause of death was chronic brain disease and epilepsy. Deceased had a mother at Wanganui; be was a Bingl© man and had been visited by friends while in the institution. . _ ~ . , , , Attendant Wells stated that he had attended deceased since his admission. He required frequent changing, and was regularly attended to. He had as much nourishment as he could take, and the doctor saw him frequently. , . _ , Head-Attendant Kelly also tendered evidence, and tho jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.
