A BOOKMAKER IN REPLY.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— ln your sub-leader you comment upon the bookmakers betting at the Wairarapa meeting. I think you are mistaken when yon state that they took “ shilling wagers,” as the men who were betting were above that. You also stato that the odds wore not good. Now, sir, I will leave it to gentlemen in Wellington who know about racing, and who also took wagers |at ’the meeting,” if they did not got better prices thau the machine. I will point out some of the prices to show what I state is correct— Guardsman paid A2 2a on tho machine; the public received from the books, A 3. Lady Agnes paid £2 19s,- the books paid .£4. Sir Agnes paid £1 15s j the books paid A 3. Off Chance paid £2 8s; the books paid A 3. I think those figures will speak for themselves. 1 could quote a lot more better prices than the machine. Trusting you will insert this,—l am, &0., H. Shotlandeb.
