MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THE PREVAILING THIRST. A seaman named John Aitken, who manifested a predilection for strong liquor the night previous, was charged at Court yesterday with drunkenness, and was fined 5s or 24 hours’ imprisonment. A STREET CHARACTER. Carrie Corbett, a member of the unfortunate class, was charged with importuning passers-by in Taranaki street, and also with having used obscene language. The accused admitted being drunk, but said she knew nothing of the other charges. Constable J. O’Connell proved the case, and the woman pleaded for the usual chance. Mr Kenny said he was always disposed to give first offenders a show of retrieving themselves, especially women. > In the present instance, however, there was a long list of offences against defendant, and letting her off was out of the question. For importuning she would be fined Al, or threp days’ imprisonment, and for obscenity a sentence of seven days would be imposed, the terms to be cumulative. DEBTS DIVISION. There were only two cases disposed of in this division. In that of the Wellington Corporation against G. Mason, claim ss; judgment went for plaintiff with 8s costs. The remaining plaint related to a judgment summons case, W. M. Crothers v. Charles Orr, €26 8s 7d. The Magistrate made an order for payment forthwith, with the alterative of 20 days’ imprisonment in default.
