. THE CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA. Mr John White, president of the Otago Bovriog Association and a well-known citizen of Dunedin, who is at present in Wellington on a holiday trip, is taking the opportunity thus afforded of securing the co-operation of the principal rowing men here in the direction of making perfect details in connection with the Championship Regatta, which is to be held in Otago in March. He states that it is almost certain the regatta will take place on Otago harbonr, the claims of the supporters of the-Lake Waihola coarse having been refected by the local Rowing Association. The date .was fixed for the 24th March, but we understand that it is likely to be altered to the 25th, so that the regatta will not clash with a big cash cycling meeting which is set down for the first-named date. A most liberal programme will be submitted, the prizes being of sufficient value to tempt clubs from a considerable distance, and the Otago promoters already have a tentative promise from the West .End Clnb, Auckland, to send its • champion "crew for the big event. The ques\ tion of; tbe ; appointment of the principal officials'for the regatta is receiving careful consideration from the Otago Association, and It is understood that the claims of the Wellington trio —Messrs E. 0. Batkin, as starter; A. G. Johnson, as umpire, and H. F. Logan, as judge—who have proved worthy and reliable officers at championship regattas daring recent years, aro being strongly urged by rowing men in all parts of the colony. This question, together with several other details, will be dually settled by the Dunedin people early next month. In the meantime rowing enthusiasts can rest assured that this season’s championship re*uniou will be an event worthy both the occasion and the sport. The Sydney Morning Herald* Baja the Victorian sculling championship was a very hollow affair. * Chapman jumped away at .the start, and was never asked to extend himself.’.nHe in fact had not to race at all, as bis only; opponent, G. Browne, was quite outclassed.. T,C,hapman*Si rowing, was considered excsllent ahd very.powerful; , He rowed his short outrigged this being the first time ‘such' a craft has been .used as a racer on the Yarra. : Chapman was entered for the senior sculls at the’ Upper; Yarra regatta, which will take place next Saturday.(lßth December), but bo . determined to return home by the Taluno as - there would r not be another steamer for some days.' ■ -
