WELLINGTON BRANCH NEW ZEALAND NATIVES ASSOCIATION.

hPORTS CARNIVAL AND ART UNION. TLia yoilfiK li-.L vigorous branch of tho New Zealand Natives’ Association ia to be congratulated on its enterprise in promoting an annual-sports carnival on Wellington Anniversary Day (January 22nd). The Jsporle carnivals held annually in connection with the Australian Natives’ Association have obtained a world-wide- reputation, and judging by the programme appearing in this issue, the Wellington Association bids fair to attain a, great a reputation - in; New Zealand as the kindred Association bae earned in Australia The management ia in thoroughly capable and experienced bands, as a glance at the names of those composing the, Imports Carnival Committee wilt show. The prizes are first - class, and tbo two special Bicycle Handicaps should prove sufficient to secure a very large number of entries from other parts of the colony. Given a fine day there should boa record alien iance on the 22nd January at the sports on the JBs-in, the track on which, by the way, ia to be spocUlly laid out and prepared, a committee of tbo. foremost bicycle riders i i this city having undertaken to superintend tho work, so that tbo corners can be negotiated in safety by the riders. Special care will also be taken to have the track thoroughly rolled for at lease a week befoie tho sports. In connection with the sports carnival an art union- ia to bo drawn There are 25 handsome pictures to be given as prizes, and in. addition to these the winners a- e to be' presented by various firms with presents varying in value from £1 10 to £2 For inslanoe, tho winner ot the first prize will ho presented by the Dresden Piano Company with either a Broadwocd and Sons or a Lipp and Sohn piano, as desired. Each of these pianos is valued at -EHO, and they can bo seen in the windows of that Company on Lombton quay. The winners of the second and fourth prizes will be presented by Messrs IngUs Bros, with “ Raleigh ” bykes, valued at j£3l and JE3O respectively, and the winners of the third and fifth prized will receive from Messrs Jenkinson and Co. a specially-built “ Champion” and a “ Cleveland,” valued respectively at AHO and -£27. Tho other 20 prize-winners will receive presents of a proportionately valuable kind. To show that the donors ot the various presents are not placing an, exorbitant value on their presents, tho committee undertakes to find purchasers for any of the presents not to tho taste of the winners of the prizes, less a small commission of 15 per cent, for its trouble, at their face value. We have no doubt the enterprise of the Wellington Natives’ Association will ho rewarded by a large sale of tickets, which are being sold at the, low price of a shilling, which includes admission to the sports as well as a chance in the art union. Special care will be taken to obtain a committee to superintend the drawing of the art union which will command the confidence "of the ticket-holders throughout the o ilony. Wo cordially wish the venture the~snccefs it undoubtedly deserves. ■ -
