PALMERSTON NOTES.

Special to the New Zealand Times, October 21.

At the meeting of creditors in the estate of D. B. Harris, chemist, who recently hied his schedule, the debtor attributed his insolvency to depression in trade and his own illness. He had no offer to make, and it was resolved that tenders be invited for the purchase of the stock and goodwill of the lease of the premises. Bankrupt’s services were retained at a remuneration of £4 per week until the stock should be sold.

The Borough Council has decided to include .£l5O in next year's estimates for the purpose of extending the present Fire Brigade Station—a very necessary work. The site is also to be reserved for Fire Brigade purposes only. The Brigade will thus be enabled to carry into effect its longcontemplated proposals in reference to enlarging the present station, and including rooms for library and the use of honorary members, thus giving much-needed additional accommodation. Tenders are to be called for all the works recommended by the Public Works Committee, which is also empowered|to accept such tenders as it may deem advisable.

It is satisfactory to note that the Borough. Council has made recognition, though somewhat tardy, of the services of Mr N. M. Person, who supervised the decorations of the triumphal arch erected on the occasion of the first visit of our new Governor to this town. Mr Person's taste and workmanship, given gratuitously too, in connection with the arch were the theme of general admiration at the time. It is officially announced that Sergeant Wilson, of Christchurch, has been appointed to the position held by the late Sergeant-Major Scanlon, as local head of the police. The Fruitgrowers' Association contemplates holding an autumn show. It is probable it may be held during the same week as the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's ram and ewe show and fair, viz., in the second week in February. The reason for the adjournment of the enquiry in reference to the fire by which the Courthouse was destroyed was to enable the police to obtain certain appears that there are suspicions against certain persons not local residents, but there is no actual clue. The police are, however, investigating the facta within their knowledge. The man who was injured by Mr Abraham's bull is not believed to have sustained as serious injuries as were at first supposed, aud it is hoped he will be about again before very long. At the last meeting of the Literary and Debating Society there was a mock election, Messrs Astbury and Lilly being the respective candidates. Both delivered good speeches, and both had to submit to the usual “ heckling." The first-named candidate was declared elected. The Borough Council is wrestling with the problem as to the legality of a demand for tho water supply to be out off from a property when no longer required by the occupants. A legal opinion is to be obtained on the matter.

The A. and P. Association has been granted permission to erect a ticket-box on tho road-way opposite the show ground gate. This will tend to prevent tho crush at the ticket-office which has been complained of on previous occasions. It is satisfactory to learn that the Inspector of Nuisances is able to submit a favourable report on the sanitary condition of the borough.

The bowling green was opened by the Mayor yesterday afternoon, those present being afterwards photographed in a group. The representatives of several outside clubs who had intended to accept the invitations sent them were unavoidably prevented from attending.
