NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE IN VANCOUVER.
A letter received by. a Taranaki resident, who is largely interested in the produce export trade, states that a* trial shipment of New Zealand produce sent to Vancouver has not met with the success Jt- deserved. “ Eastern State tinned meats and other produce,” states, the writer, “ were rushed in from all parts, so that the price of New Zealand prodnee, as it is bought in that colony, pnt it completely, out of the question in competition "with that sent by the American tinning companies. Do not bn any account send mote produce, as it is very difficult to dispose of it at any cost. Perhaps in 'the winter time Now Zealand butter, if of the very best quality, can bo sold for a very small profit of id per lb, but as the, city of Vancouver, which is tho most important port of British Columbia, is connected with all the American centres by rail, it would not ha advisable to send any prodnee- ’' The writer then quotes figures to show that from the sale of 13 oases of-New-Zealand tinned meats,; valued at £l3, he received £7, after payment of freight (£1 4s) and duty (£3105).. Then he adds “ Advise any others not to come here at present. 'There are 3000 men who have been thrown on the labour market, and work is hard to get.”'
