At Caulfield this morning Trent galloped a mile and three-quarters in taking style hr Smin lfiisec. Fleet Admiral took a second longer over a similar distance, finishing well, Positano, Clarion and Ditto arrived at Flemington this afternoon; i all three are looking well. Positano is equal favourite with Aurum for the Melbourne Cup at 109 to 12, but betting is dull.

Valiant and Alvaare scratched for the Melbourne Cup. A. Allen, the rider of Gay Lad, who was injured by his mount falling in Saturday’s hurdle race, is still in such a precarious condition in the Alfred Hospital that the doctors have been unable to perform an operation on the fractured ribs.

The Caulfield meeting resulted in a profit of between .£IOOO and .£llOO, which is over .£SOO less than last year’s gathering, but £BOO more was given in stakes this year.

The local horses Moreze and Leda left for Christchurch yesterday in view of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. The Colonial Secretary has refused a totahsator permit to the Woodvillo Jookey Club for a second meeting this season. A meeting of the club was held the other night to consider the matter, when a deputation consisting of Messrs R. Smith, J. Motley and H.
