PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE.
The Public Works Committee of the City Council met last night, Mr H. D. Bell (Mayor) presiding. - The City Solicitor wrote in regard to alterations to the Western Hotel. Action had already been taken, and a fine of and coats inflicted at the Magistrate’s Court. After discussion, it was decided to adhere strictly to the by-law and to allow no variation therefrom. A letter was received from the Harbour Board in reference to the Empowering Bill and the baths site, and it was decided to refer the matter to the City Solicitor, who will report to the Council at next meet-
ing. In regard to tho application of Mr F. Hill, tbo City Solicitor was asked to decide whether tho Council is liable or not for the claim.
Tho Caledonian Society applied for the use of the Basin Reserve on New Year’s Day. The request was granted. Similar applications from the Bight Hours. Demonstration Committee and the City Brass Band in regard to the Reserve wei e also granted. It was ■ decided to offer a section of land at Victoria street, adjoining Mr A. P. Stuart’s, for lease. - * A communication as received from Mr Walter J. Nathan concerning season tickets at the baths. It was decided, after discussion, to recommend that children under twelve years of age should be given tickets at under two shillings a month. The City Solicitor reported in reference to Chinamen’s gardens. It wasjdecided to take no action in regard to them unless the. burgesses move in the matter.
