BOWLING.
TfIORNDON CLUB. There was a very large assemblage of brightly-costumed ladies and lovers of the gentle game of bowls at the opening of the Thorndon Bowling Club’s season on Saturday. The green was in perfect order—in fact, it may be said that never in the history of the club has it begun a season with so perfect a greed. Nearly 300 people including tho members of the club, wore present. Dr Grace, the president, opened tho green for play, and boforo doing so made a few humorous remarks. Tho club, ho added, had done a great deal to bring the green t:> a state of perfection. To the ladies ho would say, with a fairly long experience of life, that he took d material, interest in. their \yeUhoing. and he could safely affirm that a good bowler who cculd play the game and Iceep his temper would make the best of husbands. He had heard it said that bowling was a game for old men, but no man was old who was always looking forward, and one must look forward to play at bowls. To the members of the green he was able to impart the. information that the committee had completed arrangements for the purchase of the ground. He then opened the green. During the afternoon seven rinks were played by teams picked by the president and vice-president. Mrs Grace, assisted by Mesdames Rose, Barry and Jameson, presided at the teatable. NEWTOWN CLUB, The Newton n Bowling Club’s green was opened on Saturday at 2,30 p.m. by the president, Mr J, McGowan. There was a large attendance of ladies and visitors. During the recess the directors have added a very neat verandah, which, will greatly add to the comfort of members and visitors. The green is now under the charge of Mr Millride, and although heavy from recent rains, bids fair to be in far better condition than in any previous season.
