BIBLE TRUTHS

tor Earnest Seekers WHO believe that the Book we call the Bible is the inspired word of God. We ask you to consider the following facta about yourselves, because they surpass in importance all others. Do not say, “It matters not what we believe,” for God has predicated Salvation upon a belief of THE THINGS Hb HAS CAUSED TO BE written. He has declared that He will look upon him that is poor, and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at His word (Isa. Ixvi., 2) —that “ word ” which He has magnified above all His name (Psalm oxxxviii., 2). When we examine this word, we find what we affirmed in our last advertisement to be true, viz.) that “ CHRISTENDOM;” IS ASTRAY FROM THE BIBLE. This will be apparent to all who consider the following facts. These facts are (1) that has is mortal because of sin, and (2) that Christ is the Resurrection and the Life (Rom." v., 12—John xi., 25). 1 here is, therefore, upon these hypotheses, NO FUTURE LIFE APART FROM CHRIST. The teaching of the Pulpit is, that man has within him an immaterial, immortal entity, which they call an immortal soul, that this “ particle of the Divine essence ” is the subject of spiritual cure, that if it be " saved ” by the possessor believing what the clergy preach, it will wing its flight to. realms of bliss “above the bright blue skies,” when it puts off this “ mortal coil,” that if it be “lost,” it will descend to regions where, thioughout the endless ages of eternity, it will suffer the most exquisite torture it is possible to conceive! Reader, can you believe that the Almighty will permit countless millions of atoms of Himself to be subjected to such objectless torture ? Our whole intellect revolts at the very thought of such brutal diabolism. Instead of Go • being proclaimed as a God of Love, His character is libelled as a Monster of Iniquity. And, not only does common-sense condemn the popular theory, but the Scriptures negative it on almost every page. A few of the main facts of the Scriptural aspect of the subject will be sufficient, we hope, to urge our readers to further study. (1.) The terms “immortal soul" and “ immortality of the soul ” are not to bo found in the Scriptures. (2.) The words “ immortal ” and “ immortality ” occur only six times, in which oases they are used as characterizing the nature of God (i. Tim. vi., 16—i. Tim. i., 17), as being brought to light through the gospel (ii. Tim, i., 10), as a reward to those believers “who patiently continue in welldoing ” (Rom. ii., 7), and as a thing to be “ put on ” (i. Cor. xv., 53,' 54,), showing that we cannot have possession of it now. (3) The words “soul” and “spirit" do not in themselves imply the possession by man'(,f a separate, or separable, immortal entity. Scholars inform us that the original wordstranslated “soul" and “spirit” in both the Old and New Testaments are also applied to “ beasts and every creeping thing.” Hence, there is absolutely no evidence in favour of the popular belief. These facts also throw a light on THE DOOM OP THE WICKED in accordance with Scriptural testimony and the highest reason. God has declared that He will utterly destroy all evil persons and things. They are to be “cutoff" (Psalm xxxvii., 9) — “into smoke shall they consume away ” (ver. 20), they are “ like the ieasts that perish ” (Psalm xlix., 12) j “ they shall never see light ” (ver. 19); “ they shall be stubble, and the day that oometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them NEITHER ROOT NOR BRANCH” (Mai. iv., 1). “ They shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord” (ii. Thess. i., 9). “The soul that sinneth it shall die ” (Ezekiel xviii., 4, 20). If these references bo not emphatic enough for some, let them reflect on the fate of the Babylonish armv. “ THEY ARE EXTINCT, THEY ARE QUENCHED AS TOW” (Isa. xlili., 17). Neither can the righteous be in heaven praising God. And this is just what isaflirmed in the Scriptures, “THE DEAD PRAISE NOT THE LORD,” (Psalm oxv., 17), which statement is diametrically opposed to popular notions. “ The dead know not anything” (Eooles. ix., 6) : “ his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth j in THAT VERY DAY HIS THOUGHTS PERISH ” (Psalm oxlvi., 3,4) ; “ David is not ascended into the heavens ” (Acts ii., 34). Reader! consider well these testimonies, and behold how they shatter the very foundations of popular theology! Consider also this fact, that the Scriptures affirm the earth to be the future .inheritance of the righteous. See Matt, v., 5; Rev. v., 10, xi., 15; Psalm xxxvii., 9—11; Dan. vii., 27 j and also, that the apostolic hope was not heaven-going at death, but a resurrection from the dead (I Cor. xv., 13—23; Phil iii., 7—11; ii, Tim. iv., 6—B). Correspondence invited. Address, in first instance— W.S.C., 9, Ellice Street, Wellington. |
