She will bo in commission about the end of next week. The ferry steamer was brought alongside the Queen's Wharf yesterday afternoon to have her mlzzon-rnast lifted out by ouo of the hydraulic cranes. While (he Queen of the South was on the slip receiving a cleaning, advantage was token to fit a new blade on the propeller in place of one which was cracked. Sbo left last night for Foxtom Tbo barquo Dovonport, now discharging at the Rallwav Wharf, proceeds to Kalpara to load timber for Melbourne about the middle of next week. The Huddart-Purker liner Wcstralia left at 3.45 yesterday afternoon (or Sydney via East Coast and Auckland. Her Wellington cargo consisted of 120 tons general. About 300 tons of produce from South is going forward by this steamer. She landed 85 tons at this port.

The Stormblrd is shipping 100 tons of railway Iron for Wanganui. She leaves at 10 this morning. Mr Lippett, the newly-appointed chief officer of the Kawatirl, recently passed an examination in Dunedin for a master's foreign going certificate. Mr Hood, late third officer of the Tukapana, who passed an examination in Wellington (or a chief officer’s certificate, has been promoted to the position of second officer of the Taupo. The lonic, from London via Hobart, should reach here early on Monday morning, having sailed from Hobart early yesterday morning. The Richmond, which has been detained at Westport through bad weather, should arrive to-day. The Tarawcra, from Sydney via. Auckland and East Coast, should arrive early this morning. Bhe leaves this afternoon for Melbourne via South.

The last Sydney mail brought particulars of two now steamers which have been launched for the Japanese Mail Steam Ship Company, now running a subsidised lino to Australia. The Sado Mara, the name of the first launched, is a twin-screw steamer; length, 413 ft; breadth, 49ft din; depth, moulded. 83ft Gin; and built to Lloyd's highest class and Board of Trade requirements for a passenger vessel. She is of similar dimensions, but of somewhat different design, to the Kamakura Maru, recently built by this firm (or the same owners. The vessel will carry a large dead-weight cargo on a moderate draught. A large number of first, second and steerage passengers will bo accommodated. The other steamer, the Taraba Mara, is about 6000 tons gross, constructed to Lloyd's 100 A 1 class, and also to Board of Trade requirements for passengers. The vessel has accommodation for a large number of first and second-class steerage passengers. She will have a complete installation of electric light, Including signal and Suez Canal lights. Lord Brassey’s fine yacht the Sunbeam is now cruising in Queensland waters.

The statement in tho telegram that 27 lives were saved leaves it to conjecture how many lives were lost. She bod a crew of about 47 onboard, of whom about 20 were Chinamen, and tho rest Europeans. Her skipper was Captain J. H. Goodwin. She carried no pas* songers. The vessel was a steel screw steamer of 23<38 register tons, 2603 gross tons, and 1813 not register tons, and was built in 1890 by Messrs Scott and Co., of Greenock, for the owners, the Ocean Steamship Company. She was 336 U in length, 33*51t in breadth, and 27ft in depth, and belonged to Liver* pool. The great 8000-ton steamer Egypt, built and engined by Messrs Caicd and Co., of Greenock, for theP, audio. Company, went her official trials on Friday, August 27th. These wore of a very successful kind, and the steamer, which is a sister ship to the India, was taken over by tho Company. Sbe was to leave Greenock for London tho middle of September.

She is of 23,000 tons, and is tho largest cargo steamer afloat. THE MATAURA, FROM LONDON. The Mataura, which should arrive from London via Capetown and Hobart on Sunday next, brings 2100 tons of cargo for Wellington, 1000 tons for Lyttelton and 1r»33l r »33 toils for Dunodin. In addition to tho above she brings 078 tons of transhipments for Wellington, making a total of 6280 tons of cargo. THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY'S ARRANGEMENTS. Tho local office of tho New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice as to the departure of its steamers from London to this colony as follows Kaikoura. 14th October; ILM S. Otarama, Uth November j Rakaia (cargo steamer), 25th November; Tongariro, oth December; Bualune, 7th January. These steamers, * the Rakaia ex* canted, are all coming out on mail dates. Tho Rimutaka, which loft P ymonth on September 18th, and Kaikoura are coming to Wellington via the usual porta. Tho first port of call in tho colony of tho other steamers has not yet been fixed. Of* the sailing vessels, the Agnes Lilian left London, on July 24th for Port Chalmers, and the Waitangi and Rangitikei, for Lyttelton via the Bluff, oo August 21th and October 2nd respectively.
