SUNDAY LABOUR IN THE MINES.
PROTEST FROM THE MINERS. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Auckl and. May 15. Mr Ferguson, of the Labour Bureau, has received strong complaints from the Thames concerning the unnecessary Sunday labour in some of the mines. He is investigating these complaints with a view of reporting to the Government. The gist 'of these statements is that a large amount of Sunday work is going on as a general thing in the upcountry districts of the. goldfields, and the evil is gradually growing greater month by month. It originated with the wealthiest companies on the field, the reason given being that the nature of the treatment required continuous work, but it has now grown to be a general custom in most of the batteries where they have not that excuse, and they have even commenced in some of the mines. The general opinion among the miners is that some decided action will have to he taken at once to put a stop to the evil, *r there will be no difference between Sunday and any other day shortly. _________
