THE ARCHBISHOPRIC OF CANTERBURY.
Scene at the Confirmation of the Election of Dr Temple. By Telegraph.—Press Assonntion.-~Copynght. ‘Received December 21,1.40 a.nr. London, December 23. A remarkable scene took place yesterday at the confirmation of the election of Dr Temple as Archbishop of Canterbury. The Rev Mr Brownjohn, chaplain to the late Bishop of Bath, protested against the confirmation on the ground that Dr Temple had confessed that ho was a believer in evolution. Dr Maclagan, Archbishop of York, chief commissioner, overruled the objection, but Mr Brownjohn twice reiterated his protest and declared the ceremony a farce. There was an immense congregation. A mandamus will probably be applied for.
