The Stormbird arrived from Wanganui early en Saturday morning, and returns to-day. Both the Walhl and Noptuno left for Blenheim at 4 o’clock on Saturday morning. . „ Tho Wairoa, from Takaka and Motueka, arrived at 4.85 a.m. on Saturday, and loaves for Patea today. The Tarawera arrived from Melbourne, via Hobart and South, at 5.80 on Saturday morning, and continued on her way to Sydney, via East Coast and Auckland, at 0 the same night. Tho Tasmania, from Sydney, via Auckland and East Coast, arrived at 11.80 a.m. on Saturday, and loft at 8.15 p.m. for South. She returns to Wellington on Friday, and leaves for Sydney, via tho usual ports, In the afternoon. Tho schooner Bock Lily, with COO sacks of wheat, arrived from Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon, and berthed alongside the breastwork at 2.20 p.m. She loft Lyttelton on Monday night, and during tho bad weather of .last week sheltered under Cape Campbell. From this port the Rock Lily proceeds to ColJingwood, and loads therewith timber for Lyttelton. The Walhi returned from Blenheim at 6.15 a.m yesterday, and leaves again at 6 this evening for tho same place. The Wakatu, which left Lyttelton at 10 p.m. on Friday, called at Port Robinson and Kaikoura, and arrived here at 7.35 a.m. yesterday. She returns this evening. Tho ketch Alarm, formerly a cutter employed In tho Now Zealand coastal trade, was wrecked off Suva on July sth. She was boating out, failed to weather tho reef off Suva, and was carried aground by the heavy sea. All the cargo was saved, most of it being uninjured. Tho Star of Victoria, from London, via Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Napier, arrived in Wellington at 1.45 p.m. yesterday, having left Napier at 5 p.m. on Saturday. She loads about 10,000 carcases of mutton hero, and leaves for Wanganui and Bluff on Wednesday, making tho Southland port her Anal port of departure. Tho Neptuno arrived from Blenheim at 6.30 p.m. yesterday. Sho returns to-day. ‘ During the gale last week tho Waverley, from Westport to Foxton, sought shelter under Kapiti Island, where the crow succeeded in catching an exceptionally largo number of fish largo and small. Tho steamer arrived at Foxton safely, but was bar-bound there two or three days. She was expected to leave for Wellington yesterday. Tho Upolu loft Auckland for Fiji on Saturday night.
According to advices received on Saturday, the Queen of the South and Waverley were both barbound at Foxton, and there was a strong westerly blowing. They were to sail on the first favourable opportunity lor Wellington. They left Foxton yesterday afternoon, and arrived here this morning —■the Queen of the South at 1, and the Waverley about half an hour later. Mr Kiddell has succeeded Mr Buchanan as chief officer of the Rimutaka, the latter officer having retired from tho Now Zealand Shipping Company's service. Tho steamer Pram left Sydney on Friday, for Natal, with a full cargo and fairly large number of passengers. It is interesting to the shipping community to know that steamers of 5000 tons gross register, with a length of -100 ft and drawing up to 20ft of water, havo lately entered tho harbour of Natal, South Africa. Tno new dredge has done excellent work since she commenced operations early in Fcbruftw. Tho greatest difficulty at the port of Natal now' is want of accommodation inside tho harbour to meet the demands of tho great increase of trade. Last week tho barque Aloxa loft Tirnaru for Natal with 6000 sacks of oats. She took the Capo Horn route and started with a strong, fair breeze. Two Timaru young men are passengers by her. Tho Glasgow ship Blairmoro was capsized in San Francisco harbour on April 0. She was A vessel of IKin tons, and ub tho time of tho disaster was lying at anchor, with only 200 tons of ballast on board. Four of tho crow and an apprentice wore drowned. The rest of tho crow who were aboard (nine in all) were saved. Some of the men were down below clearing tho hold when tho ship wont over, and they managed to force their way out against tho inrush of water. An attempt was mode to rescue the men who were entombed in the hull by cutting a hole through tho iron plates of the bottom, but tho only effect was to liberate tho imprisoned air, and the shin wont down. Tho Rimutaka, which arrived from London and anchored in tho harbour late on Friday night (as reported In the Times) was berthed alongside of tho Queen’s Wharf at 8.30 on Saturday morning, after being Inspected by tho Health Officer and admitted to pratique. Following is a report of her voyage Tho Rimutaka loft Plymouth on 30th May, arrived at TcneriiTe on 4th June at noon, and left for Capetown at 9 p.m. same day, anchoring in Table Bay on the 22nd at G p.m.; landed passengers, and left for Hobart ut noon on tho 23rd; arriving there at 9 a.m. on tho 12th instant; landed 26 passengers, discharged 160 tons cargo, and loft for Wellington at 9 tt.ni. next dav. Encountered moderate to fresh wc.Uc<-)y winds to 13., and thcnca to Capo F vrmvcH fresh westerly gale, with fierce squalls and high seas, arriving in harbour as stated after an uneventful voyage. Ico was seen in 44deg 50mln 8. and Uhteg K., and a steamer steering east, and showing four green lights as a night signal, was passed in-ITdug lOmin S. and 103fleg 38min E. Particulars of *hc steamer’s cargo have already appeared. The Rimutaka is expected to leave to-night for Lyttelton, where sho will be docked, and she takes her Anal departure from Lyttelton (or Loudon on A gust 6th*
Captain Stevenson, who U in command of the Btar of Victoria, has associated with him the following officers Chief, Mr F. J. Willis; second, Mr H. C. Campbell, third, Mr K. D. Beck; fourth; Mr 11. Nye; and Mr Nixon i» chief engineer. The Penguin arrived from Lyttelton at 12.10 p.m. yesterday, and returns there, on a special trip, this afternoon.
Advice has been recelvod ef the arrival In London of the barque Cynisca, from Wellington. Mr Nixon, the well-known chief engineer of the steamer .Star of Victoria, now in port, has resigned his x-ioaition, and leaves the vessel on her arrival in London. Mr Nixon, who has been trading to New Zealand for many years past, intends to enter into partnership with Mr Reid, of Cardiff, as consulting engineers and patent agents. HR many friends in this part of tho Colony will doubtless join in wishing him every success in his new business.
