THE PRISONERS AGAIN BEFORE THE COURT, AND REMANDED TO WELLINGTON.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copy right. Received June 17, 0.40 a.m. Sydney, Juno 16. Kirby and Bassett were again before the Court to-day. The original warrants produced by the police officers from Wellington wore presented, and accused were remanded to Wellington. They will probably bo despatched to that city by tho first steamer leaving direct. THE PEELING IN NAPIER. Special to the New Zealand Times. Natick, Juno 15. Naturally enough tho Kirby caso has been the chief topic during tho last fortnight. Kirby had been stationed at Napier for a few years, and when he was arrested he was searching for thieves at Waipawa. There is scarcely a resident of the place who has an iota of sympathy for the fallen detective, and it is said there is scarcely a member of the force who has not a score against Kirby. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, June 16. At the Supreme Court this morning, the Crown Prosecutor made application to the Chief Justice that the depositions of oxDeteetive Kirby, taken in the lower Court in the case of William Boyle, charged with theft, be allowed to go before the jury, on the ground that Kirby was now absent from the Colony. The Chief Justice was not sure that being absent had the same meaning in tho terms of tho Act as having left the Colony. It could not be said that a person who had " gone away on a visit ’’ had left the Colony. Ho had no objection to tiro depositions boing placed before tho Grand Jury, but their subsequent admission as evidence he would make a mailer of further consideration.
