CITY BREVITIES.

A. man who had stowed away from Liverpool on a sailing vessel applied to the Benevolent Trustees yesterday lor relief. The captain of the vessel, who was present, said that the man was lazy and would .not do tho work requited of him on the passage out. He was quite willing to take the man back again if he would only do his work. The man said that he would rather go to gaol than ship again on the same vessel. The Trustees said that they could do nothing for the man, and advised him to go back to the ship, or else go into the country and look for work. If he remained in the town be would be arrested for vagrancy and kept in prison till the vessel was about to leave, aud then would be sent back in irons.

Two informations have been laid against the licensee of the Cricketers’ Arms Hotelone for alleged Sunday trading aud the other charging the defendant with supplying a man who was in a state of intoxication with liquor. A civil case was hoard before Mr J. C. Martin, S.M., yesterday, in which A. M. Lewis sued Mrs Emily Downes for <£C2 17s, amount claimed as commission for effecting the sale of the Club Hotel, Lambton quay, from defendant to R. Darroch. The case occupied the Court the greater part of the day. Mr Martin gave judgment for plaintiff for the amount claimed and costs, amounting to 18s. Mr Edwards appeared for plaintiff and Mr Skerrett for defendant.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, AY. Dobson, P. O’Halloran and Carpenter, three expressmen, who were charged with soliciting employment on the AYellington and Manawatu Railway Station, were fined 10s, and costs 14s each. Two persona were punished for drunkenness. A boy named Tho?. F. Matthow was committed to the Burnham Industrial School. The General Committee of the Seddon Birthday Testimonial met at No. G room, Kxchange Buildings, last night, Mr P. Hutson in the chair. The final arrange* ments for the presentation to take place on Monday next were made. The presentation promises to be a great success. Tickets were issued to members of the committee, and the committee are to meet on Monday night at the Skating Rink at a quarter past 7. The examination of local candidates for the Accountants’ Institute is now proceeding, and is expected to conclude to-morrow. The examiners and their subjects are:—Mr Brent, English; Dr Milne, law; Mr AV. Brown, accountancy. There are three local candidates. Tho total number of candidates in the Colony is 13, made up as follows : Dunedin, 4; AVellington, Christchurch and The Executive Committee of tho New Zealand Counties Association will meet this afternoon for the purpose of arranging the order of business at the Conference, which begins on Friday. The remains of Miss Evelyn Moore, of the Hospital nursing staff, were interred in the Karori Cemetery yesterday morning. A short service was hold in St. Peter’s Church, at whicn many of the Hospital staff and other friends were present. The Dead March in “ Saul” was played at the close of the service by Mr TTimnell, The Rev AY. C. Waters conducted the service in the church and at the grave. Mr Alf Lawton’s clever variety company is evidently improving in popularity. Last night there was again a large attendance at tho Opera House when the company gave another performance. Encores were the order of the evening, almost every item on the varied programme being rodomauded. One of the best items on the programme was the burlesque skating act by Messrs Norris and Williams. To-night tho company will appear in their first change of programme. Messrs A. G. Taine and Co. concluded yesterday a very successful sale of the household furniture, cows, horses, &c., at McNab’s, Lower Hutt. Bidding f.»r all lots was very spirited and good prices resulted. Mr Taino wielded tho hammer.

On Thursday evening Mr Charles Wilson, editor of our weekly contemporary tho New Zealand Mail, will deliver a lecture on “ Daniel DeFoo, Journalist, Novelist, Man,” at bt. Andrew’s schoolroom. Mr Wilson's proviouslecturca, delivered in connection with at. Andrew’s Literary Society, have been much enjoyed. Admission will be free, a collection being made in aid of tho Society’s funds.

Quito a crowd of people collected outside Almao’s hat shop last night. The unobservant passer-by naturally wondered why the people Syere there,and at first it was thought they had taken leayo of their senses, for they were shrieking with laughter. Tho reason tor this was soon apparent, for at the upstair windows of the Dresden Piano Company’s warehouse a shadow could be seen. It was ducking and diving, bobbing its head and waving its arms about as if it were possessed, and tho effect was ludicrous. The shadow seemed to bo that of a musician conducting an orchestra, but might have been that of anything else, from a very excited Frenchman to a clown re* hearsing for a shadow pantomime, t Dontice’a gymnasium will ho thrown op.en to the public to-night, and several boxing contests between AYeJlington exponents of tho ‘ } noble art of self defqnoo wijltake place. A good programme, comprising trapeze performances and club exhibitions will also bo gone through.
