MASTERTON-OPAKI JOCKEY CLUB. THE DISPUTE REGARDING THE TOTALISATOB PERMIT. From Our Own Correspondent. Mabterton, February 17. A special meeting of tho stewards of the Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club was hold in the Club Hotel on Saturday night, when there was a representative attendance, - Mr A. W. Cave, president, in the chair. The mooting was called for the purpose of considering a telegram from Mr H. M. Lyon, secretary to the Metropolitan Club, stating that the programme of the Masterton-Opaki Club for St. Patrick’s Day had boon passed only on condition that no totalisator should bo used. Correspondence was also read shewing that the programme had been submitted for approval about tho middle of January, and Mr Waddington, secretary to tho local club, had written since then, enquiring why it was that tho programme had not boon considered. In reply, Mr Lyon wrote to say that there had been no ordinary mooting of tho Metropolitan Club since the receipt of tho programme, and that tho Club had discontinued tho meetings hold on tho first Monday of tho month. The telegram notifying that the programme had been passed was dated February 14. After some discussion, in which several of tho stewards animadverted on the delay in passing tho programme, it was moved by Mr A. Walker, “That tho programme as passed bo accepted, and that no notice bo taken of the latter part of tho telegram) but that o totalisator license bo applied for by tho secretary ? that Messrs Cave, Hogg and Waddington bo a deputation to proceed to Wellington and endeavour to obtain a totalisator permit; that the same gentlemen find out on what day, in the future, a programme should bo submitted to tho Metropolitan Club.” . .. ~ . .. Mr Hogg, in supporting tho resolutions, said it was strange that other clubs in much smaller districts hod no difficulty in getting their totalisator licenses, whilstevory obstacle was thrown in tho way of their club, which catered for tho amusement qf a population of between 10,000 and 12,000 people. When on a former occasion it was necessary to approach tho Colonial Secretary with reference to the treatment received by them from the Metropolitan Club, that gentleman said he would see that justice was done to the Opaki Club. Ho (tho speaker) considered that the Utter part of the telegram was an insult to the Colonial Secretary. , Mr Maoara said that it was very strange that obstruction was put in tho way of their club getting a permit with such a large population in the district whilst places, with not half the population had not the slightest difficulty in obtaining the privilege. The resolutions on being put to tho meeting were carried unanimously, and it way decided the deputation should proceed to Wellington on Monday morning, Mr Handel suggested that the secretary write to the conference and ask that justice be done to tho club. It was five weeks since 1 the programme had been submitted for > approval, and it was only the previous day > they received a communication to say that it

had been passed. They had not sufifiai'-nfc time for advertising tho meeting. ITo considered they should cake some steps to ensure that they were treated with more courtesy ia the future. MrWalkor said that the member? of the Metropolitan Club wore taking' on their should-?:-,; the function of the Colonial Secretary. A tm.v r.nhanks to vho r-o'v.'/rnar: terminated the busii'c.-M.
