PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Philosophical Society was held last night. Hr T. Kirk, P.L.S., presiding, ft was announced that Major-Qoneral Sohaw had been nominated to vote in the election of Governors of the New Zealand Institute for the ensuing year. It was also, stated that Mr W. Mitten, P. 14.5., Sussex, England, was nominated by the Society as an honorary member of the New Zealand Institute in place of the late Professor Huxley, Sir Walter Bullor described, under the name of "D.cinacrida broughi,” a new species of forest-weta from the Karamea saddle in the provincial district of Nelson, A fine series of these remarkable insects was exhibited, tbe largest of them measuring, with appendages, twelve inches in extent. He also exhibited a perfectly white tui (an albino) from Stewart’s Island, and a specimen of the tree-lizard named by Mr Colenso “Naultinua versicolor.” The last mentioned specimen was received from Mr Andrew Luff for presentation to the Museum. It was found at Yogeltown, and ; has the ohameleou-like faculty of changing its colour. Mr K. C. Harding read some “ Ornithological Notes,” in which he <(rew attention to some remarkable blinders regarding New Zealand orpithpjogy which he Had discovered in an publication, and cautioned the puhUO UgWnst buying snob productions. ‘ The President read some further notes on Oactylahthus taylori, and exhibited specimens with drawings of Hewers.
