SIR GEORGE GREY PROPOSED AS KING OF GREECE.

(New Zealand Herald, June 2U.) A life of tho late Professor Freeman him just been published, It is in two Volumes, by iJr Stephen, Dean of Winchester, who was a life-long friend of Mr Freeman. In one of the letters of tho volume there is a passage of some special interest to us. In 18)12 Greece wanted a king, and people wore anxious to obtain an English prince, or a prince connected with England. Mr Freeman wrote thus to tho Greek Minister in London “If you cannot find a Greek, or failing a pure Greek, an Albanian, Servian, or Bulgarian, I should rejoice to soo your choice fallen an Englishman. But then surely it should be an English man and not a nine-tenths German lad. Surely some man who has had real experience in government,, some statesman, or Co’ onial Governor, Mr Gladstone, dr Lord Stanley, or Sir George Grey pfNcW Zealand (who I,should think ivotild bo just tho than tp deal with Any unruly elements in tho country), is what you really want, not Alfred of Saxo-Coburg, or Lcuchtenberg, or anything of tho sort. It is the most glorious opportunity for throwing aside all the wretched caste traditions of Royalties and Highnesses, and settlin'' a real anax androu at the head of a nation. I find most English friends of Greece quite agreeing with iricT.” That Professor Ficeman made (his proposal tb tho Greek ambassador in London lias never, wo think, hecti made known till now, and wo have no doubt that Sir George Grey will smile somewhat sadly when ho reads it. If ho had been selected, wo have no doubt that Sir George would have sot himself earnestly to tho extirpation of brigandage, which unfortunately still lingers in Greece. Probably by this timo Greece, under Sir George Grey, would havo absorbed Macedonia, and wo should not have been afraid of a re-opening of tho Eastern question in that quarter. Howover, Greece got a Gorman prince after nil.
