FIRES.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, June 2-1. A fire broke out early this morning in a building occupied by Collard, fruiterer, Avenue. The alarm was given by a dog. The inmates had a narrow escape, a woman and two children having to be lowered through the upstairs window by shoots. A child four years old fell from a window to the pavement, but no bones were broken. Mrs Collard and one child were much shaken. The inmates were almost suffocated. The place was completely gutted and everything was lost. Collard’s stock and furniture wore inv tuned for £l5O, and the building for £2OO in the Mutual office. Blenheim, June 24. A boardinghouse, occupied by Mrs Wilson and owned by the Government Life Insurance Department, was destroyed by fire this evening. The Criterion Hotel, next door, had a harrow escape, and much damage was done by water to the furniture, Ac. The boardinghouse was insured in the Phoenix Office for £7OO, reinsured for £2OO iu the South British Office. The estimated damage to the Criterion furniture and stock amounts to from £2OO to £3OO, and the building was considerably damaged. The insurances are in the Royal, South British, Union, Norwich and Phcenix Offices. Christchurch, June 24. A fire occurred to-night in a shop in High street occupied by Foster, fruiterer. Mrs Foster was lighting a kerosene lamp when it fell and the place was speedily iu a blaze. The stock and furniture which were insured for £10(1 in the Standard Office, were detroyed. The building was insured for £75 in the Commercial Union office. The stock of Knight, tobacconist, in the shop adjoining, was much damaged by water, and was uninsured. Gisborne, June 24. About 1 o’clock this morning an oightroomed house at Patutahi, owned by Mr McLaughlin, was burned down. It was insured in the Alliance Office for £4OO.
