THE TOWN CLERK'S REPORT.
The Town Clerk submitted his sixth annual report at the meeting of the City Council last night. He states that tho financial results of the year must bo considered satisfactory. Tho receipts generally were in excess of tho estimates and some items of expenditure were less than was expected, the result being that tho actual increase in the overdraft did not exceed .£I7OO. A sum of .£(520 was paid off the To Aro reclamation overdraft, beinghalf the receipts for rent of the sections of Te Aro reclaimed land already let. As the sections are now being let the amount available for this purpose will be considerably larger next year. The valuation of the city for this year, completed in February last, amounted to £319,811, an increase of .£9056 upon last year. The valuation of the city in 1873, when the Corporation started its career, was .£76,210, while the population at thatdate was in round numbers 10,000, as against 35,000 at present. In 1673, when the highest value put upon any single property was .£IOO, there were three properties valued at £IOO annual value. Now there are 5S properties valued at £-100 aud upwards.
