It is a matter for considerable satisfaction to those who take an interest in the progress of local industries to learn that since the New Zealand Candle Company started operations at Ivoiwarra two years ago, the importation of English candles has fallen for 12 months from 770,2331bs to 371,0321b5. This is duo directly to the special efforts made by this company to turn out candles equal, and in some oases superior, to the English. The Stearine made in, New Zealand is of the finest quality, due probably to tallow being cheaper hero than in England, consequently there is no necessity for introducing adulterating matter. The colonial wax candles made by the New Zealand Candle Company are also of the finest possible quality,, being made from high melting point American paraffine wax, which. is superior to the Scotch wax as used in England. The above facta account for the increasing popularity of such brands as the “‘Vends,” “ French Sperm,” “ Five Mbdad," and “ Premier.” The latter is remarkably cheap,' and is now the most extensively used candle in this district. After ! inspecting samples of our locally - made I candles, it seems strange that the public should pay 2d and 3d per pound mure for the English. ‘ • ■ j J
